Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Player Gets Suspended For Gross Reason

Though Super Smash Bros. Ultimate may be one of the best party video games of all time, the fighting game has gained a reputation for having not only one of the most toxic communities, but one of the most unhygienic as well. Many people have heard the jokes about Smash players refusing to bathe, but in this case, some of what goes on there is even more disgusting than most people would've imagined.

During a set at Wednesday Fight Nights on December 18th, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate player Nicko "Nicko" Bonilla was suspended for 30 days by organization 2GGaming. Did he spoil who the next DLC fighter will be? No. Instead, following a heated argument, Nicko spit on an opponent.

The incident occurred during the most recent Wednesday Fight Nights hosted by 2GGaming. During a break between pool matches, Southern Californian Shulk main Nicko and his rival, Shawn "K9sbruce" Bruce, decided to play some off-bracket Super Smash Ultimate games. After K9 lost to Nicko's friend, Erick "HLB" Gamino, K9 and Nicko got into an argument over the game. According to a statement from Nicko, K9 was making a scene in front of everyone, going on about how he would beat his friend next time.

K9 then turned his attention toward Nicko with comments like "You’re trash and are nothing without Shulk." This provoked Nicko who started throwing insults back at K9. As their comments got increasingly personal, their quick warm-up session turned into a serious grudge match. After K9 continued trash talking him after winning a game, Nicko became so enraged he spat on his arm. It was at this point that their confrontation escalated to physical violence.

After staff broke up the fight and Nicko was able to cool his head, he formally apologized to K9. Unfortunately for Nicko, he was still disqualified from the event. What's more, 2GGaming announced on Twitter its decision to suspend him from all future events for 30 days due to his unsportsmanlike behavior. K9, meanwhile, was allowed to keep playing and made it all the way to the Quarter Finals before being knocked out by HLB once again.

It's hard to imagine one of The Game Awards' Game of the Year candidates could draw such controversy, but the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament scene does seem to have a reputation for scandals. Just a few months ago, top Super Smash Bros. Ultimate player Zack "CaptainZack" Lauth announced on Twitter that he would not be competing in the Smash Con tournament. This news came following an admission that he asked former pro player Elliot "Ally" Carroza-Oyarce to throw matches at big tournaments. Even more shocking was the news that the two of them were in a romantic relationship while CaptainZack was still underage.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now for the Nintendo Switch.
