Horizon Zero Dawn Sequel Is Missing From Most PS5 Event Rumors

A lot of recent rumors have been popping up suggesting that a proper PS5 reveal is set to happen during an event that will be held sometime in February. Though there have been a few exclusive games that were also rumored to be revealed alongside the PS5, one notable title that seems to be missing from the conversation is Horizon Zero Dawn 2 or whatever the final game will eventually be called. The sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn is more than likely a real project, but its eventual reveal and release dates are a little more up in the air.

Ever since Sony confirmed the existence of the PS5 in 2019, fans have been trying to fill in the missing information with as many educated guesses (and sometimes outright wild predictions) as possible. This would not be the first time this has happened with a PlayStation console either. Back in 2013, Sony had revealed the PS4 logo, its controller (the Dualshock 4), some new features coming to the PS4, and a handful of new games. Famously, it held off on actually showing the console at the time, saving its big reveal for E3 2013 instead.

Just like today, that situation led to fans creating their own mock-ups of the console and imagining their most sought after titles appearing alongside it. As of now, Sony has only released the PS5's logo and some of its specifications. With Sony again holding off on the console’s design, this situation has once again led to fans filling in Sony’s gaps in information. Besides PS5 fan design concepts, people are also speculating as to which games Sony will choose to reveal with the PS5 and which it will save for later.

So far, games like God of War 2 and Spider-Man 2 are being rumored and talked about more than Horizon Zero Dawn 2. A recent rumor from Reddit claims that Spider-Man 2 already has its story completely planned out, with many enemies, like Venom, Carnage, and Mysterio, written into the game. The same Reddit rumor also detailed some new game mechanics, including one Diablo inspired gameplay mechanic where street crimes ostensibly act as dungeon battles all throughout the city.

If true, this could suggest that Spider-Man 2 is further along than what most are expecting. Former Game Informer writer Imran Khan, who is known to have credible sources, backed up this idea when he publicly suggested the same thing a few months ago. Conversely, there is no similar style of speculation behind a sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn. This could suggest that either Sony is good at keeping secrets (which it doesn't usually appear to be the case) or that the highly anticipated Guerrilla sequel is simply too far out to be discussed.

When Sony in 2019 demonstrated how Spider-Man’s load times could be significantly reduced using PS5 technology, that behind-closed-doors demo also indicated Sony’s interest in using the extremely popular Marvel franchise to bolster its new and upcoming console. Though the title is rumored to be releasing holiday 2021, the same rumor suggests that Sony wants to connect it to the PS5 early on.

Other titles like the sequel to God of War and Gran Turismo 7 are also rumored to appear at the PS5 reveal event, but the fact that the sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn has not been as focused on as other games could be a result of shifts in administration between Sony itself and Guerrilla Games. The developer has been posting job listings for future projects as recent as November. Also in November was the promotion of former managing director of the studio, Hermen Hulst, to head of World Wide Studios at Sony Interactive Entertainment. This shift has certainly had some effect on the schedule that the studio was planning on, while a potential PC port of Horizon Zero Dawn could also be pushing the studio back.

February is probably going to be a big month for Sony. Whether or not the sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn shows up alongside the reveal of the PS5 is up in the air, but there are only a couple of weeks left before all is officially known.

Horizon Zero Dawn 2 is rumored to be in development.
