Obsidian Details How it Created Grounded | Game Rant
Xbox hosted its first installment of Inside Xbox for 2020, offering fans a look at a number of new games and tech coming to Xbox this year. While many were disappointed about a lack of Xbox Series X news, fans were given an inside look at games like Obsidian's new title, Grounded.
Obsidian previously announced its new survival game in 2019, showing off that the developer will be working on a brand new IP within a fairly unfamiliar genre for the studio. Since the announcement, news on Grounded has been mostly silent, right up until a new trailer dropped during the Inside Xbox livestream, as well as an in-depth look at how the game has been developed so far.
With the short video, Director Adam Brennecke talks about how he and his team began looking at how to build a survival game, claiming that the first step in the process was to play and research other survival games to familiarize with the genre.
As for developing Grounded itself, Brennecke claims that the initial approach comes from the story that the game wants to tell and how the team went about telling that story. Obsidian has a strong relationship with in-depth story telling from crafting games like Fallout: New Vegas, as well as 2019's award winning RPG The Outer Worlds.
Additionally, when it comes to the story of Grounded, Brennecke continued to explain how the environment and world of the game is handcrafted with an emphasis on making the area feel alive. With an emphasis on environmental storytelling, as opposed to telling most of the story through character dialogue, Grounded will be a departure from Obsidian's usual tactics, especially when it comes to crafting stories around exotic characters. However, that doesn't mean that the player will have no one to talk too, as one of the NPCs that the video highlights is a friendly robot named Burgle, who will be the player's buddy throughout the gameplay experience.
Looking at Grounded and where the handcrafted experience seems to be headed, with dark mysteries and a vibrant world, it looks like Obsidian's risk with a new IP may pay off. Additionally, a number of other games shown off in today's Inside Xbox livestream have also caught some attention, but this latest game by the makers of The Outer Worlds is easily the most fascinating. With this game coming soon, Xbox is looking to have a productive year with plenty to offer in terms of quality exclusives and features.
Grounded is set to release on July 28th, 2020, for PC and Xbox One.
