Xbox Project xCloud Public Preview Starts in October | Game Rant
Project xCloud has been in development by Microsoft for some time now, and fans have been eager to be among the first to try it. Now players will have an opportunity to do just that, as the service is opening for a public preview.
Project xCloud is Microsoft's take on streaming gaming. It will allow players to stream Xbox games to their mobile devices, including phones and tablets. Although the service isn't ready for prime-time just yet, Microsoft is taking the opportunity to ask fans and players for their input with this preview.
Users who are interested can sign up now via the official Xbox One Game Streaming preview page. The preview will launch in October and will allow players to download an app to their Android mobile devices to play Xbox One games. Notably absent from this launch is any word on an iOS app, however.
To participate, players have to meet a few guidelines. Interested gamers will need to have an Android device running 6.0 or higher with Bluetooth 4.0 and a Bluetooth-enabled Xbox One wireless controller in order to play. Players who don't initially get into the preview may have luck later on, as the preview will be continuously accepting new users.
To start, the service will only have a few titles to play, including Gears 5, Halo 5: Guardians, Killer Instinct, and Sea of Thieves. Players will not need to purchase or spend money on any of these games in order to test them. Microsoft has also promised to expand the service to include new games as the preview continues on. When the service eventually launches, it will allow players to access all digital Xbox One games, which is no small feat.
Streaming looks to be the future of the gaming industry, with a number of different companies all either developing or already premiering game streaming services. Microsoft previously stated that it wanted to be the Netflix of gaming, allowing players to effectively pay a flat fee to rent titles and stream them on their Xbox One or mobile devices. However, the service will be up against a considerable number of contenders. It remains to be seen which will come out on top, especially since Google Stadia is one of the competitors joining the streaming market.
