Bungie Might Fix Destiny 2's Bounty XP Problem After Holiday Break

Over the last week or so a debate has raged in the Destiny 2 community over the XP system in-game. Players are frustrated with being steered towards bounties to earn ranks on their Season Pass, while actual in-game activities feel empty and unrewarding.

The timing of the conversation was unfortunate because most of Bungie’s development team has gone on vacation for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, and thus they can’t respond immediately to player concerns. However, one of Destiny 2’s community managers has taken to social media to let players know that the studio is listening, and maybe there will be more beyond that.

Although he and the other community managers announced a break until early January, Bungie’s dmg04 hopped on Twitter to address some of the conversations he and the other devs have seen online. Specifically, dmg04 wanted to call attention to concerns over the XP system in Destiny 2 and player frustrations.

Dmg04 makes no promises that Bungie will even make any changes to the bounty system in Destiny 2, but at the very least the developer is listening. Perhaps the next time an update comes around, Bungie might boost activity XP rewards to be more in line with completing a handful of bounties.

The issue over XP in Destiny 2 is a bit complicated because of how the community likes to consume content in the game. Most players focus on the quickest way towards any goal – be it a weapon, completion of activity, or a quest step. In the case of ranking up the Season of Dawn Season Pass, which is arguably one of the biggest things there is to do this season, players have found that bounties trump all else.

However, hopping online, jumping around the solar system, picking up bounties, and then mindlessly completing them isn’t much fun after a few days, let alone weeks. As a result, many Destiny 2 players started to voice their frustrations online, questioning why bounties are the greatest source of XP in the game.

It’s true that players can get far more XP just from baking cookies for the Dawning event then they can completing an entire run of the Garden of Salvation raid, and that is a problem. Prior to the start of Destiny 2 Year 3, Bungie put a lot of emphasis on allowing gamers to experience the game as they wanted.

The idea was to take away the inconsistent reward system that existed in Year 2, and move towards one that was clear and even. But with the power level cap only going up by 10, players quickly saw little value in their weekly rituals. The goal then became to complete the Season Pass, and then the flaws with XP became more apparent.

Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
