Final Fantasy 7 Remake Image Reveals Brand New Character Roche

Square Enix released a number of screenshots yesterday that showcased classic characters and scenes in the new Final Fantasy 7 Remake's HD engine. However, among the fan favorite faces and locations came an all new character, added specifically to the new revamped story for the upcoming remake.

The new character, named simply Roche, appears in one of the screenshots released yesterday, along with a short description to go with the new face. Adding new characters certainly does imply that Square Enix is making good on their claims that the Final Fantasy 7 Remake will have a brand new story, large enough to make the Midgar section into a full length game.

Roche has been described as a 3-C SOLDIER, or SOLDIER Third Class, meaning that he is within the same elite group that in-game heroes like Cloud, Zack, and Sephiroth were once a part of. His 3-C ranking does mean that Roche is bottom tier as far as other SOLDIER's go, but he does rank leagues above the standard Shinra Army Troopers that make up the majority of the cannon fodder within the game. The most interesting fact that Square Enix decided to include about the character is his love of his bike, which might mean that the motorcycle chase at the end of Midgar might be getting a new boss in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

Roche's character description also sounds like it fits in perfectly with the rest of the Shinra employees, claiming that his comrades find him annoying. This is backed up by the fact that Roche has a habit of making his rear tire squeal until everyone behind him is stuck choking on burned rubber. The "burned rubber" comment will likely play into the encounters that players will have with Roche as Cloud takes center stage and challenges the braggart to a motorcycle race.

Adding a new character to the Final Fantasy 7 Remake is a bold choice for Square Enix to make, but likely one it'll need to make if Episode 1 is going to be large enough to be considered a full length game. It's yet to be seen if Roche will make it to Episode 2, with little information on the future of the remake in general, but if fans like him enough, he might be implemented later on. Even if he "dies" at some point in his introductory episode, it is possible for him to be retconned back in later like Rufus Shinra was for Advent Children.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is set to release on March 3rd, 2020 with limited exclusivity for PS4
