New Resident Evil Mod Lets You Play as Ellie from Last of Us
The reimagined take on Resident Evil 2 was already a familiar but novel experience when it launched earlier this year, modernizing Capcom's horror classic for a new age of gaming. In addition to finally giving players the chance to step into Leon S. Kennedy's debut adventure in Raccoon City without the fright of dealing with the original PSone version's tank controls, the PC version of the remake has become a canvas for modders to bring imaginative crossovers to life, with a mod that brings The Last of Us's Ellie into the Resident Evil universe.
Made by RE2 modder and streamer DarknessValtier, the mod replaces Claire Redfield's Elza Walker skin with Ellie's character model from the first entry in Naughty Dog's post-apocalyptic horror series. While the older version of Ellie seen in The Last of Us 2 may have been a better fit overall, fans will probably have to wait until that title's May 2020 release to see the more experienced version of the survivalist make her way into mods like these, and the younger Ellie fits into Resident Evil 2's setting and style surprisingly well.
Fans can check out Ellie in action inside RE2 in this video, and the mod can be downloaded in the description on YouTube. The next modern remake for the series, Resident Evil 3, will land in April, and more Resident Evil is on the way in the form of an RE7 prequel and a multiplayer spinoff called Project Resistance, but until those games arrive, mods like these will likely be a major source of content for players hungry for more from the iconic horror series.
The mod isn't the first time fans have taken the opportunity to blend the game with other nightmare-inducing franchises. One earlier tweak replaced Resident Evil 2's Mr. X with Jason Voorhees of Friday the 13th fame, while another did the same with the infamous lead character of Untitled Goose Game. With a vibrant community making the game into its own unique experience beyond the original 1998 version of the title, it's only a matter of time before more clever crossovers emerge for the newest entry from the Resident Evil fandom.
