PS5 Controller Will Have This Big Improvement Over DualShock 4

Gaming peripherals have evolved immensely over the years, escalating from Pong's simple analog sticks all the way to the modern 1-to-1 motion controls that powers VR experiences. In that time, Sony has also adapted to the times, adding analog sticks to PS1 controllers, SIXAXIS motion to PS3, and a new rising star in controller tech to the PS5 with the upcoming replacement for the current DualShock 4.

The new tech in question is haptic feedback, one of the most prominent features of the Nintendo Switch's Joy-Cons that helped make the system so successful on launch. This comes as good news for anyone who was afraid that the PS5's controllers might have launched in 2020's holiday season without any vibration feedback like the original DualShock 3s.

President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan spoke in an interview with Famitsu about the future of the PS5. In the interview, Ryan specifically mentions the design of the PS5's controller, although he doesn't call them out by name as DualShock 5s. He claims that the haptic technology adds a different gameplay feel to gaming, even to titles currently available to play with the PS4's DualShock 4 peripheral.

For those unaware of what "haptic feedback" really is, the two buzzwords equate to the PS5 controllers having an HD rumble that gives 1-to-1 feedback as opposed to the standard vibration experienced with the DualShock 4. This was one of the major selling points of the Nintendo Switch when the system was first demoed with games like 1-2-Switch that showcased the ability to feel precise motion simulations. For a title like Gran Turismo Sport however, the game that Mr. Ryan claims to have tested the controllers with, it could mean the difference between a slight rumble when the cars move, and the controller pulling the player's hands into a turn.

Not much information was given on exactly how advanced the haptic feedback on the PS5's controllers is at the moment, or where the technology will be on launch next year. However, if what Mr. Ryan has to say about the way even old games can feel with the new peripheral, there may be even more incentive to purchase the console since players will be able to tell the difference themselves through backward compatible titles. And with new tech like this being developed, it may be for the benefit of the company and the players that Sony is officially out of the mobile market and pressing harder than ever on home consoles.

PS5 is expected to release in Holiday 2020.
