The 10 Best Game Sequels For PS4 (According To Metacritic)
As the decade winds down to a close, so are the games releasing for the PS4 as the next iteration in the PlayStation brand is on its way. In the last six years we’ve had this console, though, many sequels from the PS3 days have been released.
In order to make this list be about true sequels, we haven’t included “Game of the Year” editions or remasters that were originally released for a prior console. That said, here are the best sequel games released on the PlayStation 4 that you should check out if they aren’t already part of your collection.
10 Diablo III (2014) - 91
Once associated only with PC gaming, the Diablo series has since jumped into the console market too in order to expand its userbase. Released as the “Ultimate Evil Edition” but having no prior editions on the PS4, Diablo III was a successful debut on the PS brand.
The PlayStation fanbase already loved hack-and-slash games like Devil May Cry and God of War, but they got a better deal with this one as it also offered them an RPG experience. With seven character classes to choose from and a breadth of side options, Diablo III is a game to play for hundreds of hours.
9 Resident Evil 2 (2019) - 91
This wasn’t a remaster or an updated edition of the original, as Resident Evil 2 for the eighth generation consoles was a release worthy in its own right. Featuring the general outline of the original but with noticeable tweaks in the story, it also diversified by completely changing the style this time round.
Resident Evil 2 Remake instead had the gameplay features of the much-lauded Resident Evil 4, as the over-the-shoulder style ensured fans saw Raccoon City in a new light. Such was the reception, that the game now ranks as among the very best in the series.
8 Divinity: Original Sin II (2018) - 92
Another game considered mainly a PC offering, Divinity: Original Sin II arrived a little late for the PS4, but was just about the same in its high quality as its PS4 counterpart. Open-world games today need diversity to be engaging, so this one presented players with a large variety of RPG options that made use of the setting.
The game also offers a lot of customization features that fans can make use of to present more flavor in gameplay, as well as the multiplayer setting creating a unique atmosphere with many other players joining in from around the world.
7 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015) - 92
While The Witcher series had first entered the console market in the previous generation, it had done so on the Xbox platform and remained elusive for the PS userbase until The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

6 Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (2016) - 93
It’s surprising to see this game rather low on this list, as Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End was easily the most talked-about title in all of PS4 history. With Nathan Drake’s story coming to an end, the final sequel brought its A-game in the series debut on the PS4.
It delivered on all fronts, as everything from the puzzles to the action, and especially the story were wrapped up in perfect amounts for fans to enjoy. Multiplayer was bolstered from the PS3 days as well, and the replay value was off the charts due to the lengthy runtime.
5 Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (2015) - 93
It seems like this will be the last Metal Gear Solid we’ll get for a long time, since creator Hideo Kojima has since moved on to Death Stranding and beyond, but The Phantom Pain at least was a worthy farewell.
Complete with the trademark espionage of the series, this one completed the storyline that had started all the way from the first Metal Gear with one of the biggest twists we’ve seen in gaming. The gameplay reflected the kooky quality the series was known for, while also being scary in places.
4 Persona 5 (2017) - 93
The Japanese market loves having slower, more drawn-out playthroughs with its games, meaning RPGs are all the rage there. Persona 5 is the best fit for them as it has two distinct styles of play.
The lead character here has separate experiences that form part of the gameplay, with the slower lifestyle of the lead seeing him go through his time in school where players navigate him through these struggles. Night sequences are the bulk of the fun as here the game switches to action in fantastical locations.
3 God Of War (2018) - 94
Some might not consider this as a sequel but a reimagining of the series, but that can’t fully apply since 2018’s God of War does continue the story from God of War III. Here, the PS4’s enhanced featured allowed for the gameplay to be way more diverse from the hack-and-slash days of the series.
Featuring Kratos with a changed outlook of the world, the protagonist and his son head out to explore the Norse universe as we see gods and monsters in this land threaten the duos adventures. The story is the true winning quality here, as you can expect to shed more than just a few tears.
2 Grand Theft Auto V (2014) - 97
Although released much earlier for the seventh generation consoles, Grand Theft Auto V found its true calling on the PS4, as sales on this brand allowed the game to become one of the most-sold games of all time.
It was for good reason too, as GTA V is every gamer’s dream what with the huge open-world that can be explored to your heart’s content, three very unique protagonists, an online world of its own, and the series’ trademark gameplay to boot.
1 Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) - 97
It’s become easy to predict that Rockstar Games offerings are sure to be among the greatest video game releases ever, and Red Dead Redemption 2 confirmed this notion by becoming the most well-reviewed release on the PS4. Continuing on from the original released on the PS3 and other seventh-generation consoles, the sequel doubled its efforts with the open-world to bring the complete American Frontier experience.
Unlike GTA, Rockstar put more input into the story mode, and we got a heartfelt story that was reminiscent of the themes put forward from the original. It’s unlikely any sequel, or any game for that matter, will receive better reviews on the PS4.
