The Game Awards 2019 Loses a Major Game at the Last Minute

The Game Awards 2019 is just a few hours away from airing, with host Geoff Keighley confirming on Twitter that rehearsals are done and the show is ready. But while the show may be going forward, it'll be doing so without one of the only games confirmed to be shown at the event. Valve has just officially announced that Half-Life: Alyx will no longer be shown during The Game Awards 2019. Keighley will have to fill its spot with something else.

In a post to Twitter at 2:15 pm PT, just over three hours before the start of The Game Awards 2019, Valve confirmed Half-Life: Alyx wouldn't be participating in the show. The account first offered an apology for the game's lack of attendance and ended by saying that, "The team is hard at work on the game, and we're excited to show you more in the new year." It also reconfirmed that the game is planned to launch in March 2020, which some fans may question given the suddenness of Valve's The Game Awards 2019 cancellation.

Half-Life: Alyx was initially confirmed for The Game Awards 2019 shortly after the game's announcement. Geoff Keighley went on Twitter to announce that more information about the VR game would be shared during the show. Given that Valve's initial announcement of Half-Life: Alyx was rather thin and bereft of details, many expected Valve to fully detail the game in tandem with The Game Awards 2019. It seems that further information about the game will have to wait until later.

No reason for Half-Life: Alyx's appearance cancellation was provided by Valve, but one could probably be assumed. Demos or trailers often don't get finished in time for an event, or don't work out as well as hoped. The only real error that's occurred is that Geoff Keighley announced Half-Life: Alyx would be at The Game Awards 2019 when clearly there was still quite a bit of uncertainty if Valve could manage it. Keighley, who will be producing a behind-the-scenes docu-video for Half-Life: Alyx, was perhaps overexcited about the game.

Just because Half-Life: Alyx won't be appearing at The Game Awards 2019 doesn't mean that Valve will be staying silent about the game for the foreseeable future. If Half-Life: Alyx remains on-target for a March 2020 release, more details are bound to be shared soon. Valve may even continue working on the trailer or demo it was planning for The Game Awards 2019 and instead show it at a different event. The rest of 2019 seems unlikely for such a reveal given the lack of events, but early 2020 seems like a promising possibility.

Half-Life: Alyx releases March 2020 on PC.
