Yakuza: Like A Dragon New Gameplay Trailer Revealed | Game Rant

With only a few weeks until its January release date in Japan, SEGA's Yakuza: Like a Dragon has uploaded one final trailer for players to view. The video features in-game footage of the protagonist, Ichiban Kasuga, and his rag-tag band of supporting characters in a re-imagining and celebration of the franchise's 15th anniversary.

As the eighth entry in the series, Yakuza: Like a Dragon is set to bring many departures from the previous games. For the first time, neither former series protagonist, Kazuma Kiryu, nor the familiar stomping grounds of Kamurocho are the main focus. Instead, players will explore Yokohama district of Isezaki Ijincho for the first time in-game as Ichiban struggles to make sense of the world after being in jail for eighteen years. Furthermore, instead of the traditional beat-em up combat the series is known for, the newest entry focuses on turn-based RPG combat.

With the turn-based combat system in the newest game, Ichiban will battle various enemies along with his team members including Namba, Koichi Adachi, and Saeko Mukouda. The gameplay trailer shows these turn-based mechanics in action, with Ichiban and Co. taking on hordes of enemies that usually outnumber them. To face the odds, each character uses unique and peculiar moves to dispatch foes. For example, Ichiban wields a baseball bat to knock out opponents, Namba can fight by breathing fire through strong alcohol, and Saeko can charm enemies as well as hit them where it really hurts.

From the preview of in-game fights, players will have many more options when it confronting adversaries throughout the story. But in addition to the semi-realistic techniques shown like wrestling moves, there are bound to be other larger-than-life special attacks which the Yakuza cast will be able to use on antagonists. Indeed, it should come as no surprise if at some point Ichiban channels the dragon's rage to wipe the floor with some antagonists.

With the last trailer before the full game releases in 2020, it seems SEGA has pulled out all stops to make the newest game another success for both the company and series. As a soft reboot of the franchise, the game is meant to celebrate 15 years of innovation such as Saeko being the first female fighting character directly controlled by the player.

In the end, there may still be some players who are unconvinced or dreading the shift to turn-based combat in Yakuza: Like a Dragon. However, SEGA has acknowledged if the change is badly received, it is willing to return to real-time combat for future titles.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon is scheduled to release for the PS4 on January 16th 2020 in Japan with a worldwide release followed later that year.
