10 Reasons PlayStation Fans Should Be Excited About 2020
At the start of the new year, and even a new decade, players are working on new years resolutions and finishing out the remainder of their 2019 catalogue. However, this new year is bringing its own rush of brand new games and tech, and PlayStation fans specifically have a lot to be excited for as they enter 2020.
Still holding the title for most exclusives, limited or otherwise, Sony is going to be a powerhouse of amazing games, many coming to the PS4 within the next few months. Then there's Sony's newest piece of hardware to consider, with features that may reinvent gaming as we know it.
2020 is bringing tons of new weapons to the world, and while not all of them are exclusive to any system, PS4 players will still be able to plug and play a number of the biggest titles of the year. Some of the non-exclusives include games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Dying Light 2, bringing fantastic new titles to multiple systems.
Other games will also be rolling out updates throughout the year, such as the next rush of fighters coming to Mortal Kombat 11 and the next seasons of Fortnite and Apex Legends. With so much new content, 2020 is likely to be a year to remember for gamers all around.
Fans of asymmetrical games like Evolve or Dead by Daylight will be happy to see a brand new title coming from the development studio that brought us Friday the 13th: The Game. IllFonic, the studio behind the game, is bringing another classic horror franchise to life, this time choosing Predator instead of Friday the 13th as the backdrop for the game.
Hopefully, IllFonic learned from the shaky launch of its previous release and will be ready to address bugs and matchmaking issues when Predator: Hunting Grounds releases. The unfortunate decline of Friday the 13th: The Game might have taught the studio how to handle a launch of such a high profile title, and narrowing the scope down to a PS4 exclusive should make keeping on top of updates and patches more manageable for the small development team.
Easily one of the highest anticipated games of 2020, Naughty Dog's Last of Us Part 2 looks to continue the story of Last of Us, a title that some have been calling the best game of the last decade. Naughty Dog clearly has a lot to prove with this one, considering the lofty heights that this game has to live up to.
While the game itself has unfortunately been delayed past its initially revealed release date, this does mean that the developers are more focused on dropping a quality game a little late, rather than a broken game on time. It's been mentioned before, but considering the alternative of getting an underwhelming release, delays can be the better option sometimes.
Not reaching for quite as lofty of heights as the Avengers game set to release later this year, Iron Man VR plans to put players into the famous Iron Man suit. Exclusive to PSVR, PlayStation players will get to take a ride through the skies as Tony Stark with all the flair and style of the character's flights in the MCU.
Iron Man VR will be joining the surprisingly large collection of PlayStation exclusive VR titles, built specifically for the PSVR headset. It's yet to be seen if any of PSVR's games will end up branching out to other systems in the future, but considering how the system has held onto other exclusives, that might be unlikely.
The follow up to Team Ninja's Nioh from 2017, Nioh 2 is looking to be the best in its class for 2020, perhaps even topping the plethora of Souls-like games from 2019 that flooded the market. To this day, the original Nioh is still one of the best games within the genre not made by From Software, so Nioh 2 has some big shoes to fill.
After players were given a taste of Nioh 2 through the open beta that launched in the fall of 2019, it's already clear that the highly anticipated prequel will satisfy. Team Ninja has even reportedly taken extensive notes from beta testers to apply to the full release of the game, lending credence to the perceived quality of this upcoming title.
It's hard to know where to begin when bringing up the excitement swelling around the Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Square Enix has toed the line of controversy and excitement, by adding new story beats, an episodic release, and character redesigns. However, no matter how many controversies hit this game, nothing is going to stop the hype train that is ready to plow right through March when Final Fantasy 7 Remake is set to hit shelves.
After years of rumors, tech demos, and pranks, Square Enix is finally releasing one of the most highly requested remakes of all time. Taking Final Fantasy's first attempt at 3D graphics and recreating the blocky designs with HD redesigns of classic characters and enemies, the Final Fantasy 7 Remake is set to be the biggest release of the year, coming exclusively to PS4, for now.
Not exactly a new release this time, but still a huge win for PS4 owners, Persona 5 Royal promises to be the best way to play the best JRPG of 2016. Royal comes with updated visuals, new quests, and new loot for players to find as they search through the game and fight of everyone's inner demons.
Players looking to get into the Persona franchise may want to hold out for the Royal release, although Persona 5 alone has been toted as a perfect starting point for first timers to jump into the series. However, not everything coming to PS4 in 2020 is a remake or re-release, and there is a ton of new content on its way now.
The Yakuza series has slowly been releasing its entire catalogue onto the PS4, starting with Yakuza Kawami 1 and 2 and eventually releasing remasters of every other game that didn't originally release on the system. However, the future of the series isn't completely in the past as Yakuza 7 is set to release sometime this year.
Continuing the long running series' incredible story, Yakuza 7 will make its mark on the franchise with its unique combat system. Instead of leaning into the stylized action of previous entries, Yakuza 7 will play with turn based combat that turns the flashy combat into something more akin to Final Fantasy.
Another huge game hopefully launching for PS4 this year is Ghost of Tsushima, although an exact release date still hasn't been officially announced. Ghost of Tsushima touts intense dueling combat as well as an in-depth customization mechanic that lets players create the titular Ghost in the image of their perfect fighter.
With the reveals teased for PlayStation's State of Play before 2019's Game Awards being some of the highest anticipated of the Winter, the hype is clearly high. More information will likely be coming in future PlayStation announcements, although likely not E3, which might give players a better idea of exactly what Ghost of Tsushima is going to look like on release.
Saving the best for last, Sony has announced that the next generation of gaming consoles will release during Holiday 2020. Not too much is known about PS5, as PlayStation has been slow to even show what the system itself looks like, instead releasing an official logo and showing off some minor features. However, if rumors and hearsay are to be believed, some coming straight from the horse's mouth, there are even more unannounced game changing features that are still coming.
The PS5 will be launching with competition, although the data might suggest that Sony's newest system could beat the new Xbox when both release at the end of this year. Both systems boast an end to loading screens, and their specs are close enough to seem negligible to casual players. So, it really comes down to which company has more good faith, and exclusive releases on launch that will decide which game wins the latest console war.
