Twitch Streamer Swebliss Accuses Site of Discrimination After Ban
Though it is one of the most popular live-streaming sites available, Twitch has been the subject of plenty of controversies, especially concerning their bans. The Amazon-owned site, which is the home for many popular streamers such as Dr Disrespect, has banned several streamers over matters that seem trivial and inaccurate.
Just recently, Twitch has banned popular Swedish art and fashion streamer Swebliss for 24-hours over inappropriate attire. Swebliss seems to disagree with this decision, as she is now accusing the site of sexism and being discriminatory.
Twitch has strict guidelines on what it considers to be appropriate attire, with the general rule of thumb being that streamers should not wear clothes that would be inappropriate in public. However, even these guidelines are fairly ambiguous and can lead to quite a bit of contention. In this case, Swebliss believes her clothing falls well within the guidelines and her suspension is unwarranted, taking to Twitter to explain her point. In her post, she expressed disbelief at "Twitch being hateful for clothes I’ve been wearing for years!?"
In these now-deleted tweets, Swebliss accused the decision to suspend her account as being discriminatory. After six years of fashion streams, her clothing had never been an issue, so being banned after someone reported her once does seem suspicious. She may have a point about the sexism, as even when male streamer xQc streamed a full-on hentai game on Twitch, his ban was dropped after just five days. She then claimed that other streamers had done far worse things on the platform, including doxing her and saying sexist and racist remarks without facing any sort of punishment from Twitch. Swebliss deleted these tweets because she didn't want it to look like she was blaming the specific Twitch staff she had tagged.
After deleting her initial posts, Swebliss confirmed in some follow-up Tweets that she had been in touch with Twitch. She said there had been no explanation for the ban, same as when Amouranth had been banned. She also revealed the measures she takes to make sure there are no wardrobe malfunctions, going so far as to tape her clothes.
Since this is her first suspension, Swebliss will only be off Twitch for 24 hours. However, further bans will last longer, often a week. Further bans can go as long as 30 days until she is banned from the streaming site indefinitely. Doing something extreme, though, like firing a loaded gun during a Twitch stream will lead to an immediate and indefinite ban. This ban comes as a surprise to Swebliss since Twitch had apparently encouraged more non-gaming content in 2020. Like many other streamers who have faced unjust bans, she has said she "lost faith" in the platform.
Swebliss had over 210,000 followers at the time of her ban on March 21st. Twitch has not made a comment in regards to her suspension.
