Nexus Mods Users Won’t be Able to Delete Files from August Onwards
To some PC gamers, mods and mod creation is not just a fun little pastime. The ability to modify a game's files can change the way some games look, feel and even play, with some mods even changing a game's genre. Websites such as Mod DB and Nexus Mods offer new ways to showcase an enormous amount of talent, which can extend the life of a single gaming experience. However, it now appears that the latter is looking to make a few changes to how files are handled.
According to a recent report, Nexus Mods, which in the past has shown support for huge games like Fallout 4 by making it easier to install add-ons, will implement changes so that users will no longer be able to delete files, starting from next month. Instead, files will only be allowed to be archived, which will still keep them on the website's database but will make them inaccessible to users.
This arguably sounds like an odd policy to implement. It's likely that the dedicated modding community may be concerned by these changes, or even angered by them. However, it's worth pointing out that there is a reason why Nexus are incorporating this new idea. According to the site's official post, it's related to a 2019 project called "collections" which has not yet come to fruition. The overall goal, it seems, is to make modding easier in general and also make it less burdensome for those who risk downloading conflicting mods.
This new collections feature will help in creating curated lists that others can add to or share. This is why the site is removing the ability for a mod to be deleted or taken down, particularly as there's no guarantee the modder will be able to replace said file. Essentially, it seems as though archiving and hiding files will function as though a mod has been deleted, even when it's not. While it's understandable why Nexus Mods has done this, it's understandable that some may be concerned by it.
It's worth saying that this will not affect mods being uploaded by creators or downloaded by users, just that going forward next month, files will remain on the site but can be archived rather than removed entirely. This means, Skyrim fans who want jet planes in the game can still have that. Nobody is taking away anyone's ability to create, share and play the millions of game modifications that currently exist on the Nexus Mods website which is likely to be a bit of a relief, at least.
