God of War Ragnarok Will be Directed By Eric Williams

God of War Ragnarok is arguably the most highly anticipated Sony published game currently in development, and its importance to the PS5 lineup was re-emphasized by it being the closing act of the latest PlayStation showcase event. Later on, it was confirmed that God of War Ragnarok will have a new game director who will be leading the development team for Kratos’ newest adventure.

The latest trailer for God of War Ragnarok gives a taste of what fans can expect from the story, in addition to highlighting some new features. It takes place a few years after 2018’s God of War, and shows Kratos, along with his son Atreus, going on a quest to find Tyr. As it was revealed that Atreus is actually the god of mischief, Loki in the previous game, it will be fair to expect a lot of character development for him in this sequel. The trailer also gave a glimpse of several new attacks and abilities, and it seems like fans do no have anything to worry about, despite the change in leadership.

After the show, the director the previous game, Cory Barlog, went on to confirm that he is not directing God of War Ragnarok. In addition, he shared a video message with fans on Twitter, showing his reaction to the news. He first joked about being surprised at this announcement, while simultaneously removing a sticker from his T-shirt to reveal the title of the game. He then confirmed that Eric Williams will be directing this sequel. Cory proceeded to praise Eric, as well as the entire development team at Santa Monia Studio, and showed his appreciation for their talent and creativity.

Some fans may remember that Cory had hinted at Eric Williams being the director of the next game in the God of War series on Jan 1 of last year. This tease was also a part of a Tweet, where Cory simply asked fans to remember the name Eric Williams. Cory had previously joked about not being the director of a supposed God of War 2, but this turned out to be true after all.

Eric Williams has been a part of the development team for every single game in the entire God of War franchise, including the PSP titles developed by Ready at Dawn. Santa Monia Studio has had a tradition of switching directors, and according to Cory, it helps give each new game a fresh perspective. It does seem like God of War Ragnarok is in good hands given Eric’s vast experience with this series.

God of War Ragnarok releases in 2022 for PS4 and PS5.
