Hasbro To Release New Versions Of Rare Star Wars Figures
Star Wars fans will always find something to argue about, whether it be which movie is the best or why a minority of angry boys on YouTube means that the sequel trilogy is somehow being erased from canon. But there's one aspect of the franchise that will always be constant, and that just so happens to be merchandising: where the real money from the movie is made. Star Wars toys have always been a big seller, and it looks like things are about to get interesting.
A new series of collectibles from Hasbro is looking to reignite some classic Star Wars nostalgia. The juggernaut toy company is gearing up to release a line of figures inspired by one of the most obscure series in the history of both companies. That's right, Hasbro is bringing back the rare Star Wars: Droids collection that hasn't been seen since 1985. It's as if millions of vintage collectors just cried out in joy.
Many likely won't be familiar with the Droids series, both in terms of the toy line and the actual animated show that inspired it. But as for Hasbro's figures, the original Kenner release of the toys didn't receive much fanfare back in 1985, and the company's Star Wars line was discontinued shortly after. As a result, the toys themselves eventually became collector's items due to their rarity. Now Hasbro is looking to recreate those figures for a new audience, and considering the franchise's worldwide popularity, odds are they'll do a bit better this time.
The line includes figures of Boba Fett, R2-D2, and C-3PO, all with colorful designs accurate to the original releases and packaging meant to evoke the cozy retro style that many fans will find familiar from their younger days. Aside from those 3, Hasbro is also releasing a larger version of the Boba Fett figure as part of their Black Series line, for those who like the 3.75-inch toys but have a real hankering for something roughly 35% bigger.
The original Star Wars: Droids animated series that originated these eye-popping designs was a short-lived show in 1985 that followed the various episodic adventures of C-3PO and R2-D2 throughout the galaxy. They ran into characters new and old alike, including Boba Fett, though ultimately never did anything particularly hard-hitting due to the series being aimed at children. It ran alongside a similar series, Ewoks, which followed the fuzzy little natives of Endor's forest moon. Neither show lasted long, and both were ejected from the Star Wars canon, but both still enjoy the occasional reference now and then.
All 4 figures are now available for pre-order exclusively through Target. So anybody particularly interested in unlocking a previously lost piece of history (or at least anyone with kids who like bright colors and aren't susceptible to choking hazards) might want to keep an ear to the ground for when they finally release.
