More Franchises That Could Take Advantage of Battlefield 2042's Portal Concept

One of the most exciting new features coming with Battlefield 2042 is its new Portal mode. The mode is a bold new addition for the series, and allows players to build their own custom game modes using weapons, maps, vehicles, and other assets from multiple games throughout the series. It also includes a server browser so that players can find one another's creations and jump into any that catch their eye. There is still a lot that fans excited for Battlefield 2042 are waiting to see about the mode, but it is undeniable that it has some very exciting possibilities.

Early impressions of Battlefield 2042's Portal mode have been very positive, and it looks as though the mode could end up making a big impact on the wider games industry. This could lead to other titles attempting to implement something similar in newer releases, which could be a great way for players see their favorite series in new ways and get even more content out of new releases. While it would not be a great fit for every series across the industry, or even every FPS title, there are some franchises that could make great use of the concept.

Payday Could Use a Portal Mode

Payday is a series all about pulling off great heists against seemingly insurmountable odds. Whether players want to steal bags of jewels without seeing a single cop or want to go in guns blazing and have a massive shootout on the freeway, Payday has something to offer them. However, it is also a game that relies heavily on replaying missions that are randomized but still relatively the same. While there are some great mods for Payday 2 that help cut down on this repetition, a mode inspired by Battlefield 2042's Portal would help this even further.

This mode could allow players to make custom heists using rooms, layouts, enemy types, objectives, and other assets from both Payday games and even the upcoming Payday 3. Players could also customize which skills and weapons could be used in the heist which would help determine the strategy that players could take or ensure that players can't use some of the more powerful skills in Payday. This would be huge for mixing things up for Payday players, and the loot that players unlock in the custom levels could allow players to still progress their characters and loot through playing them, which would surely help the mode get a lot more attention.

The Legend of Zelda Could Use a Portal Mode Dungeon Builder

Some fans of The Legend of Zelda started calling for a title in the series similar to Super Mario Maker after the remake of Link's Awakening for the Nintendo Switch. While Nintendo has not revealed any project similar to that, one taking inspiration from Portal mode would be fantastic for fans of the franchise. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening remake toyed with this idea via Chamber Dungeons, but a full standalone game with more features would make sense.

This could allow players to create custom dungeons using tiles, equipment, and even enemies from classic titles like Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and The Legend of Zelda 2. This would allow players to make their own challenges for other fans to check out and could lead to some interesting puzzles and interactions between items like Ocarina of Time's hookshot and enemies from other titles.

The game could also allow players to mix different perspectives and controls from throughout the series' legacy as well. Exploring the assets from Twilight Princess in a top-down perspective, or fighting enemies from Wind Waker with Skyward Sword's motion controls, could lead to some interesting new ways to experience the series fans have never seen before. Players could even grab from the legendary music of The Legend of Zelda series to help set the mood for their levels. A title like this could provide fans of the series with countless hours of gameplay while they endure the long wait for mainline entries like Breath of the Wild 2.

Star Wars Battlefront Should Also Get a Portal Mode

Since it is developed by DICE just like Battlefield 2042, it does seem plausible that a new Star Wars Battlefront would feature a similar Portal mode, assuming it's received well in Battlefield 2042. This would be extremely exciting for Star Wars fans as it would lead to some very interesting interactions: It would be great to see the Empire face off against the First Order on Naboo or have the CIS face off against the Rebellion on the Death Star.

Really imaginative game modes like Darth Vader against an army of ewoks, or a squad of Droideka against a squad of republic commandos, could also happen. Some have said that Battlefront 3 isn't needed, but a Portal mode would make it an incredible experience for fans of the franchise.

What would be even better for Battlefront's portal mode is if it embraced the series' history and incorporated assets and mechanics from the original two games as well. This would allow players to play the game with the classes, maps, and mechanics that they may have missed in the two newer titles. This would not only better capture the spirit of Battlefield 2042's Portal mode, but it would also feature more maps, vehicles, classes, and weapons for players to toy with. Mashing all four games together would satisfy all fans of the series, and could very well help Star Wars Battlefront 3 be one of the best Star Wars games ever.

Battlefield 2042's Portal mode could be a huge step for EA. It will be very interesting to see how it is received upon release, especially with DICE's expressed interest in supporting it through seasonal updates post-launch. Seeing what sort of impact the mode has on the wider games industry could also prove impactful, especially depending on how it affects the battle for players between Battlefield 2042 and Call of Duty: Vanguard this fall.

Battlefield 2042 releases on October 22 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
