Ms. Marvel: What We Know So Far
Phase 4 of the MCU is well on its way, and the Disney Plus shows specifically have been really successful for Marvel as a way to explore characters more in-depth. Shows like WandaVision, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, and Loki were well-received, and have given fans high expectations for shows such as She-Hulk, Moon Knight, and of course, Ms. Marvel.
Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, is set to be introduced into the MCU in the near future with her own Disney Plus show. The character of Ms. Marvel has been a fan favorite since her introduction in 2014, and the fan response and excitement around her upcoming show has been just as enthusiastic. Here's everything that we know so far about how and when Kamala Khan will be fitting into the MCU.
Who Is Ms. Marvel?
Kamala Khan is a Muslim Pakistani-American teenager from New Jersey who discovers she has Inhuman cells in her body that give her powers. This is in line with a storyline in the Marvel comics about Inhumans who discover their heritage after being exposed to Terrigen Mist. Kamala's Inhuman cells manifest as her being a polymorph with the ability to stretch her body in almost any way imaginable, as well as the ability to grow and shrink her body and heal wounds quickly. Kamala is a huge fan of superheroes even before she gains powers, and she ends up taking the Ms. Marvel mantle from Carol Danvers as her own superhero alter ego.
What Is Ms. Marvel Going To Be About?
So far, there's not a lot of word on what the exact synopsis of the show is going to be. All that we know so far is that Kamala is a nerdy teenager who struggles to fit in at school, but loves gaming and writing fanfiction, specifically about Captain Marvel, who is her idol. The show will likely be about her learning to use her newfound powers and discovering what it means to be a superhero, while also being a teen coming of age story. Kamala's religion and culture are a big part of her identity in the comics, so the show will also likely explore that part of her life.
The tone of the show will likely be more light-hearted if it's anything like the comics, and will probably lend itself to a lot of comedic moments as Kamala figures out her powers. The show will be relatable to a teenage audience (or anyone who was once a teenager themselves), while still being a fun Marvel romp full of the superhero goodness fans are used to. As Ms. Marvel is set to appear in The Marvels, the show will likely also set up that movie.
Who's In The Cast?
Iman Vellani, a young Canadian actress, will be making her on-screen debut as Kamala Khan. She'll be joined by Matt Lintz as Bruno Carrelli (Kamala's best friend), Zenobia Shroff as Muneeba Khan (Kamala's mom), Mohan Kapur as Yusuf Khan (Kamala's dad), Saagar Shaikh as Amir Khan (Kamala's older brother), Aramis Knight as Kareem (aka the vigilante Red Dagger), and Rish Shah as Kamran.
Bisha K. Ali - a screenwriter and standup comedian - is the creator of the show, and she already has experience on the Marvel front from being a writer on Loki. Ms. Marvel is also being directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, and Meera Menon.
When Will Ms. Marvel Be Released?
The show wrapped production in May of 2021, and is now in post-production. The show was shot in Atlanta, New Jersey, and partially in Thailand, indicating that Kamala may be traveling the world a bit in her adventures as Ms. Marvel. There were also a few photos from production that show Iman Vellani in her Ms. Marvel costume, and it seems very comics accurate.
There is no official release date, but initially, Ms. Marvel was supposed to release at the end of 2021. However, it now appears that a 2022 premiere is more likely. Seeing as Hawkeye is set to be released on November 24, 2021 and will be taking up that end-of-the-year time slot, Ms. Marvel will likely be pushed to 2022.
There is no official trailer for the show at this point, but at the Disney Investor Day in December of 2020, Marvel released a short sizzle reel for Ms. Marvel that includes the creative team discussing what they hope the show brings to the MCU. It also includes some short footage of the show, including snippets of Iman Vellani as Kamala. This is the only footage of Ms. Marvel so far, but hopefully fans will get to see more of her and her introduction to the MCU soon.
