The Case for Insomniac Games to Make a New Daredevil Game
Insomniac Games has always been a name worth knowing, but since its acquisition by Sony, it has become a real powerhouse in gaming. Sony acquired Insomniac Games near the end of 2019 for $229 million, a price many would consider a steal, with Spider-Man on PS4 the year before really proving its chops. It would go on to release Miles Morales and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, and more recently, it announced Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine.
Insomniac has nothing short of a full plate, but the excitement around Wolverine is palpable. That’s because of how well Insomniac has done with Spider-Man, with that hype and trust transferring Marvel properties. It remains to be seen what happens in either game, as Spider-Man 2 releases in 2023 and Wolverine seems likely to be further away than that. But, should Insomniac take on another Marvel project at some point, it should be Daredevil.
Daredevil’s Popularity is at a Fever Pitch
While Daredevil has always been a popular comic book hero, his adaptations to the screen (of any sort) have been less so. The 2003 Daredevil film was panned by critics and viewers alike, currently sitting at 44% for critics and 35% for fans on Rotten Tomatoes. This didn’t help the situation, then, when—like many superhero games at the time—his video game for Game Boy Advance was based on this film.
While Daredevil has appeared in many Marvel games since, his appearance in the film-to-game adaptation has been his only major game. There was once a PS2-era Daredevil video game in development, but it ended up being canceled. So, his role in the video game world has been severely limited.
But now, Daredevil is more popular than ever. Charlie Cox’s take on Daredevil in the Netflix shows was spot-on, with many fans to this day clinging to theories that Charlie Cox would appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home as Daredevil/Matt Murdock. Marvel would be wise to seize his popularity soon no matter what, as the fate of the Netflix shows and their relationship to the greater MCU is incredibly tenuous, and many hope Daredevil (played particularly by Charlie Cox) has a strong future.
Insomniac Games is the Perfect for Daredevil
While how and if Daredevil’s character is ever brought in the larger MCU remains a big question mark, the time for a video game has never been better. Marvel has seen several games release lately, including Sony’s Spider-Man titles and Marvel’s Avengers, with Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-Man 2, and Wolverine all now in development too. While not all have been as well-received as Spider-Man, Daredevil has as much potential as the Webhead and Wolverine.
Insomniac Games’ focus on movement for Spider-Man would translate well, and as Daredevil is the master of several mixed martial art fighting styles, the room for a more-varied combat style is definitely there. Toss in Spider-Man’s use of extrasensory abilities but dialed to 11 for Daredevil, and Insomniac could create a genuinely fun Daredevil game with all the right flourishes for the character. At the end of the day, Insomniac may not be building its own “MCU”—as Wolverine is considered a standalone game—but it should add a Daredevil notch to its belt as soon as it can.
No known Daredevil video game is in development.
