Monster Hunter: World is already one of Steam’s top ten biggest games – ever

Monster Hunter: World launched on Steam barely an hour ago, and judging by the player counts it’s already an astronomical success. Right now it’s the number four title on Valve’s client by current player numbers, and it’s already cracked the top ten of Steam’s biggest concurrent player counts – ever.

As of this story, concurrent player counts are already past 200,000, putting Monster Hunter just behind Steam’s regular top three trio of PUBG, Dota 2, and CS:GO. Even in fourth place, that puts Capcom’s latest beyond the likes of GTA5, Rainbow Six Siege, and even massive free-to-play titles like Warframe – it’s astronomical degree of success no matter how you slice it.

You can watch the numbers rise on Steam for yourself. Steam Charts keeps track of all-time peak user counts, and Monster Hunter: World is already in the top ten. Purely by player count, that makes Monster Hunter the biggest new Steam game of 2018. It’s also already surpassed any other Japanese game in Steam history, and by extension it’s Capcom’s biggest PC title, too.

Player counts don’t translate directly to sales data, but these early numbers suggest an astronomical success for Capcom – particularly since this is a brand new, $60 release. In terms of full, retail-priced game launches on Steam, Monster Hunter is already number three, right behind GTA5 and Fallout 4, and there’s still room for those numbers to grow.

Monster Hunter: World sales numbers already painted it as Capcom’s biggest game ever, and that was announced just a handful of months after the console release back in January. It seems the lengthy delay for this PC port hasn’t slowed down anticipation one bit.
