Pokemon GO-Like Minecraft Earth Early Access Dates Revealed at MineCon
Minecraft Earth, the augmented reality mobile title based off Mojang's mega-hit, will be entering early access soon. It was announced during MineCon that early access will be starting in October, with Minecraft: Earth planned for a full release by year end.
Minecraft Earth was announced earlier this year, and offers an experience of enjoying Minecraft in the real world. It's essentially like Pokemon GO, but instead of catching monsters, players explore created areas and earn rewards via Minecraft-oriented gameplay.
While not much has been said about Minecraft Earth since its original announcement, a beta period for the title was hosted across five cities over the summer. The beta testing has gone well, so now Minecraft Earth will be moving onto its next stage of development: early access. The details of the early access (such as locations included) are not yet revealed, but pre-registration for Android users is live on the Google Play Store.
In Minecraft Earth, various little worlds will be placed throughout the real world that players can interact with for plenty of rewards. There may be a mine nearby, where someone could go for rare materials. Others can also build new bases to explore, as well. Minecraft Earth will encourage the players to go outside and explore their neighborhoods, looking for diamonds to mine or skeletons to kill. This early access version of Minecraft Earth will have crafting, new mob variants, and even more. The Minecraft Earth WWDC demo video should help to clear up questions about the AR game.
It feels as if augmented reality is the future compared to virtual reality. Augmented reality doesn't need expensive equipment or cause motion sickness, and can easily be played with modern phone technology. Mojang is hoping to ride this new wave of AR with Minecraft Earth.
It's no question on whether this title will be successful—Minecraft is still one of the most popular video games ever, even if Roblox has surpassed Minecraft in monthly users—but whether Minecraft Earth will retain player attention when it's released is yet to be seen.
Minecraft Earth will be entering early access in October for Android and iOS. A full release is planned by the end of the year.
