Mortal Kombat Movie Teases Sub Zero's Realm? | Game Rant
Despite production on the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie being just as secretive as ever, both filmmakers and actors continue to tease the film on social media. In fact, one of the filmmakers has once again teased something on Twitter.
Producer Todd Garner posted a picture recently of a Mortal Kombat set covered in ice. While the caption is clearly a take on Disney's recent animated sequel, some fans are speculating that the image could be teasing the appearance of Sub-Zero's frozen base of operations, the Lin Kuei Palace in Arctika.
Though the Lin Kuei (Sub-Zero's ninja clan) actually reside in Earthrealm, they have to remain hidden from the outside world. When looking for a remote base for his newly formed clan in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, Sub-Zero found a mysterious and ancient temple abandoned and frozen in Arctika, an icy tundra region located somewhere in China. Sub-Zero immediately claims this temple as the new home for his clan and redubs it the Lin Kuei Palace.
Neither Todd Garner nor any of the other filmmakers involved in the current Mortal Kombat movie have confirmed if this is a close-up of the Lin Kuei Palace, instead seeming content to let the fans speculate. It's possible this could be any other set following an intense Sub-Zero fight scene. In fact, the image does give an "industrial warehouse" vibe, especially with what appears to be guardrails frozen in the background.
In either case, fans are hyped to see the top fighting game Mortal Kombat as a violent, modern action movie. Many can't wait to see what director Simon McQuoid and producer James Wan (Saw, Aquaman) bring to the fighting franchise. There's also been much excitement built around the cast of characters confirmed to be in the movie, as well as the actors portraying them. Ludi Lin of Power Rangers and Aquaman fame will be playing the Shaolin monk and resident Bruce Lee clone Liu Kang. Plot details are scarce, so there's no telling if Liu Kang will be the protagonist of this film like he was in the 90's movies.
Joe Taslim, the martial artist/actor from The Night Comes for Us and Cinemax's Warrior, will be playing the iconic Sub-Zero, one of the strongest ninjas in Mortal Kombat. Other actors and characters confirmed for the film include Hiroyuki Sanada (Westworld, Avengers: Endgame) as Scorpion, Jessica McNamee (The Meg, CHiPs) as Sonya Blade, and Josh Lawson (House of Lies) as Kano.
Though the film has yet to come out, fans agree that this movie is one of the best things to happen to Mortal Kombat in the last decade. Probably the most exciting news on this movie came from screenwriter Greg Russo confirming that the film will feature the classic Mortal Kombat fatalities the games are so well-known for. The 1995 film was fine, but it's not a real Mortal Kombat film if it's PG-13.
Though filming already started this fall in Australia, fans will have to wait till 2021 for Mortal Kombat's theatrical debut.
