What is Rockstar's Next Game? | Game Rant
In 2013, Rockstar Games launched Grand Theft Auto 5, which would go on to become the most-profitable entertainment product in history. Five years later, it launched Red Dead Redemption 2, which earned near-universal critical acclaim from critics and was a massive success of its own. Rockstar's track record speaks for itself, with the company earning its reputation as one of the top video game developers in the world.
Rockstar Games has released one hit after the other for decades now, and so it's no surprise that many are interested in seeing what's next from the company. With Red Dead Redemption 2 having launched over a year ago and next-generation game consoles on the horizon, excitement for Rockstar's next game is even more intense than usual, though it's unclear when exactly Rockstar will make its big reveal.
An official reveal for Rockstar's next game could really come any day, but in the meantime, there are some distinct possibilities as to what's next for the company. The following titles seem like the most likely possibilities for Rockstar's next game.
Agent is a long shot, but it's still a possibility for Rockstar's next game. For the uninitiated, Agent was officially announced all the way back in 2009, with the game meant to be a stealth-action game of some kind set in the 1970s. Development on Agent began in some capacity at least a couple of years before its official announcement, but despite the idea having existed in some form for over a decade now, nothing substantial has been revealed.
In November of 2018, the Agent trademark was abandoned by Take-Two Interactive, which could mean that the project has been canceled. However, it's possible that the concept behind Agent is continuing on in some other form, though that remains to be seen. Rockstar has yet to officially confirm that the game is canceled, and so until then, Agent is always a possibility for Rockstar's next video game project.
The original Bully was well-received at the time of its release, earning strong reviews and sales alike. Rockstar has since ported Bully to other platforms with new features, but it hasn't gone as far as to develop a full-fledged sequel of the game. However, a version of Bully 2 was reportedly in-development around 10 years ago, only to get canceled before it was ever officially announced. Since then, rumors of Bully 2 have persisted, with convincing but fake screenshots and map images fueling speculation that Rockstar could finally be releasing a follow-up to its hit open world school game. Unfortunately, nothing official has been announced in regards to Bully 2, and it seems more likely than not that the game isn't in active development.
Perhaps the most obvious choice for Rockstar's next game is Grand Theft Auto 6. As previously mentioned, GTA 5 is the most-profitable entertainment product of all time, and so GTA 6 is inevitable. However, Grand Theft Auto 5's multiplayer mode, GTA Online, is still making an absurd amount of cash for Rockstar, and so it has continued to support it with DLC and add-ons like the recent Diamond Casino Heist update that launched just a few weeks ago. Considering this, it wouldn't be crazy to assume that Rockstar may be somewhat hesitant to move forward with Grand Theft Auto 6 just yet, what with GTA 5 still so successful.
Then again, with next-generation consoles set to launch during the holiday season of 2020, perhaps now is the perfect time for Rockstar to move forward with GTA 6. GTA 6 could take proper advantage of the next-generation technology, and deliver yet another record-breaking game release for the company. GTA 6 would presumably feature an online component similar to GTA Online, and one has to imagine that hardcore GTA Online players would have no problem moving over to the new game.
Overall, GTA 6 seems like the most likely candidate for Rockstar's next game. Like Bully 2, there have been many rumors about GTA 6 and what it will entail, with some fans believing they've found clues from Rockstar itself hidden in recent GTA Online updates. Right now, the running theory is that GTA 6 will be set in South America and will feature multiple cities, though again, we must stress that nothing official has been announced by Rockstar.
Rockstar has mainly focused on Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption this past decade, but the studio has a number of IP under its belt that it could use for its next game. One such IP is Manhunt, a stealth-horror series that drummed up considerable controversy back in the day. Despite controversy over its ultra-violent content, the original Manhunt was relatively well-received by critics, but Manhunt 2 was less popular, which is perhaps one of the reasons why Rockstar hasn't moved forward with Manhunt 3. However, rumors of Manhunt 3 have persisted, and unlike with Agent, Take-Two actually bothered to renew the Manhunt trademark back in 2018. Manhunt 3 is certainly a possibility, but GTA 6 still seems like the more likely candidate.
There are rumors about Rockstar's next game appearing on the Internet basically every day, but most of them involve Grand Theft Auto 6 or Bully 2. So when a rumor cropped up claiming that Rockstar's next game would be a new IP in a medieval setting, it caught a lot of attention. Like with any rumors, fans should take this with a massive grain of salt, but it's still fun to think about the possibilities. After all, Rockstar has largely stuck to modern times with its open world games - Red Dead Redemption being the exception - and so it would be fascinating to see what the company could pull off in something set during the Dark Ages. It would basically be Rockstar's take on Skyrim, which could appeal to an entire demographic of people who usually skip Rockstar's games.
The Rockstar Medieval game rumor didn't provide much details beyond that it would feature sword-fighting as a mechanic and that it's aiming for a Q1 2021 release. The supposed "leaker" says that an announcement for the game isn't far off, so maybe we won't have to wait too long to find out if there's any truth to their claims.
Of course, we can't rule out the possibility that Rockstar's next game is something completely different and unexpected. While Grand Theft Auto 6 certainly seems like the most obvious choice, Rockstar may pull out a Table Tennis sequel or maybe it will convert one of its existing games to VR like it did with L.A. Noire. Time will tell, but hopefully fans don't have to wait too much longer to find out what's next for Rockstar Games.
