Charity Stream Draws Criticism for Using Kissing as Donation Incentive
Twitch streamer Loserfruit is criticized for using kissing as a donation incentive while trying to raise money for Australia. It's the second time in a week that a charity stream has drawn controversy after a Twitch streamer admitted to stealing donations from viewers in charity streams.
On Twitter, Twitch streamer Loserfruit posted about her "interesting and amazing" charity stream that was raising money for Australia to help with the wildfire relief efforts. At the time, the stream raised more than $150,000 Australian dollars (around $100,000 US dollars) and Loserfruit celebrated along the way. After raising $100,000 dollars, Loserfruit celebrated by kissing Fasffy, another female Twitch streamer. Loserfruit said that their kiss was the first time she'd kissed a woman and that it was "nice." The video of their kiss has been viewed 479.9K times on Twitter.
Many viewers seemed to enjoy the video but a few others responded to the tweet to criticize Loserfruit and Fasffy for exploiting the LGBTQ community. One tweet said that same-sex couples are "harassed and sexualized" and "taunted and cat-called" and videos like this don't help. Those defending the kiss said that this isn't exploiting the LGBTQ community as Fasffy is bisexual. Many have also said that the stream featured same-sex kisses between two men and a kiss between a man and a woman.
Loserfruit also responded to the criticism to say that she and Fasffy "love and celebrate" the LGBTQ community and said that it's not about sexuality, it's "about us raising money for our country is burning." The streamer also said that while it "sucks that I have to defend a clip from a charity drive stream" she also knew that posting the video would get more people to watch the stream and make more people learn about what's happening in Australia.
It's unclear if Loserfruit's tweets have made people feel a little less upset about the stream and the kiss video. However, the streamer seems to be putting it behind her, with her next tweets celebrating how much money had been raised. $318,511 AUD was donated by viewers and this money will go to saving animals, supporting firefighters, and rebuilding homes which have been destroyed by the fires. It's a tremendous effort and many hope that Twitch matches the donations and supports Australia and Australian streamers like it has with other streams like this.
