EVE Online Player Bids $40,000 for Ship | Game Rant

CCP Games' Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game EVE Online has been raising money for fire relief in Australia through a "PLEX for Good" event that ended Sunday, joining the likes of Bungie's Destiny 2 and Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare in using a large platform to support the ravaged continent.

All donations made through EVE Online's in-game currency are being converted to real-world cash and sent to the Red Cross. Arguably the most impressive of those donations came from player Kelon Darklight selling a special edition Gold Magnate for 1,001,001 PLEX — the equivalent of about $40,000.

EVE Online is a game launched in 2003, later made free to play, that features "space exploration, immense PvP and PvE battles, and a thriving player economy in an ever-expanding sandbox" of over 7,800 star systems according to its website. Among its hundreds of available ships, the auctioned Magnate has only been made available to winning teams in Eve's Amarr Championships, a PvP tournament that occurred in 2003 and in 2016; the latter of which saw Darklight as his team's captain.

The auction was huge enough to be mentioned by the Eve Development Team in their "home stretch" update on January 24, where they said the million PLEX bid is equivalent to 160 years of subscriptions to the game. Ultimately it was bought by science YouTuber Scott Manley, who has played EVE Online and Kerbal Space Program on his million-subscriber channel. Darklight posted a receipt to his auction forum on Saturday, which was confirmed by community developer CCP Convict the next day.

After nearly two decades working on EVE Online, CCP Games was acquired by Black Desert Online developer Pearl Abyss in 2016. This acquisition occurred a month before its PC spin-off dogfighting shooter EVE: Valkyrie was released on the PlayStation 4.

The developer has continued to release in-game events and update its MMO in the years since, though some changes have drawn backlash. However CCP Games is still very connected to its community of players, even advertising all the Twitch accounts of streamers taking part in the Raid-a-Thon that ended its "PLEX for Good" event.

Another EVE Online shooter spin-off called Project Nova was in development back in 2017, but is currently not moving forward with its invite-only Alpha according to the page on CCP Games' website. It says CCP is in no hurry to release the game "until we're satisfied it provides a rock-solid gameplay experience and visuals to match."

In the meantime, pouring more development time into EVE Online has clearly helped foster a very positive community given how far players are willing to go to support people in need.
