PlayStation CEO Explains Why the PS5 Logo isn't a Big Change

During CES this week, there were many rumors floating around about Sony's presence and the PS5. And while Sony still hasn't unveiled the PlayStation 5 itself, the company has revealed something else: the PS5's logo.

In going with the most predictable route, the PS5 logo looks exactly the same as the previous logo, except with a 5. But, as Sony Interactive Entertainment's CEO Jim Ryan explains, this is all part of the secret genius behind the PlayStation brand.

In a recent interview with Business Insider Japan, Ryan explained that the new logo keeping with the same style of all the past generation of PlayStation devices is part of Sony's goal to keep the brand consistent. The CEO said it was Sony's goal to have people look at the logo and immediately recognize it as a PlayStation product, which is why every PlayStation's logo has looked so similar.

He said Sony has an "obligation" to keep PlayStation 4 owners invested and believes that attaching a similar logo to the next-gen console should do that. Of course, no one really expected the PlayStation 5 logo to look anymore different than the PlayStation 4's, but people poked fun at the logo reveal on social media anyway with jokes about how Sony is just recycling the same logo over and over again.

Along with the unveiling of the PS5's logo, Sony also confirmed a holiday 2020 release date for the new console and shared some impressive specs. However, none of that really came as a surprise. Most fans already know the PS5 will have 3D audio support and a solid-state drive for faster load times, and have probably read the report that the PS5 will feature controller backward compatibility. What most fans wanted to see is what the new PS5 will look like, but Sony still has yet to show any physical hardware, which means fans will have to keep sifting through PlayStation 5 rumors hoping to find a solid scrap of information.

Microsoft, on the other hand, already unveiled its Xbox Series X at the Gaming Awards in December, which turned a lot more heads than Sony's previously announced release date and specs. The Series X will also be going on sale around 2020's holiday season and boasts similarly huge hardware improvements.

While Sony has yet to reveal the PS5, fans may not have to wait much longer. The PS4 was originally revealed during the company's own event in February, so it's possible a similar announcement could happen just a short month from now. Honestly, if Ape Escape is being announced in 2020, then anything is possible.

PlayStation 5 is scheduled to launch during the holiday season 2020.
