PlayStation Reveals Impressive New Sales Milestones | Game Rant

Sony remained tight-lipped about the PlayStation 5 during their CES press conference, disappointing many anxious fans, but the company did have some impressive new milestones to share for the PlayStation 4, revealing just how many units the current-gen console has managed to move. It's an impressive enough number to make the PlayStation 4 the second best-selling home console of all time, right behind the PlayStation 2.

Since its launch back in 2013, the PlayStation 4 has sold about 106 million units, making it one of the most popular consoles ever. In fact, the top three slots of the list now belong to Sony, with the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 3 being the three best-selling home consoles ever made. It's an incredibly impressive pedigree for the company, especially considering PlayStation's rocky start as a failed Nintendo partnership.

Not only has the PlayStation 4 sold 106 million units, but Sony has also sold more than 1.15 billion PlayStation 4 games. That's a fairly impressive attach rate for the console, especially in an age where free-to-play games are on the rise. 1.15 billion is a mind-boggling figure, and it shows just how far the games industry has come in the past few decades. Not to mention, that's without including numbers from any other gaming companies. It would be interesting to see how many of those games are split between digital and physical copies, as it may help explain the rise and fall of retailers like GameStop.

Sony was rumored to debut the PlayStation 5 at CES, but that didn't come to pass. Still, it is impressive that the PS4 has managed to perform so well, and it'll be interesting to see how the PlayStation 5 competes with it long-term. The console is supposedly backward compatible with most PlayStation systems, which may prompt more people to pick it up on day one. Of course, it'll take a full-reveal of the PlayStation 5 before fans really start to make their decisions.

Microsoft hasn't revealed Xbox sales numbers in quite some time, most likely to avoid comparisons between the two consoles. Prior estimates put Xbox One sales at less than half of the PS4's, which would make Sony the de facto winner of this console generation, at least as far as raw sales are concerned. That being said, the Xbox Series X seems like it'll be a heavyweight in the gaming market, so Sony may have a bit more competition this time around.
