Pokemon GO January 2020 Community Day Pokemon Revealed
It's a brand new year, and that means one thing for fans of the consistently profitable Pokemon GO: a new Community Day Featured Pokemon. January 2020's Community Day will start soon, and that means a ton of new bonuses for players, including increased spawns for one particular Pokemon.
This month, that particular Pokemon will be Piplup, the Water-type starter Pokemon first introduced in Generation IV's Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. Pokemon GO players should expect to see a lot more of this adorable penguin during January 2020's Community Day, which could even be better than last year's in-game events.
The event will begin on January 19th and will see increased spawns for Piplup for three hours. Pokémon GO players in Northern Hemisphere countries will be able to catch Piplup from 11am to 2pm, while Southern Hemisphere countries will get their chance from 3pm to 6pm (all times are according to the player's local time zone). Along with increased Piplup spawns, the other bonuses that will be available during January's Community Day include egg hatch distances being cut down to 1/4th, three-hour Lure modules, and event-themed Field Research tasks to add to all the other January Research tasks. As with all other Community Day featured Pokémon, there will also be an increase in Shiny Piplups during the three hour window, which should end better than the increase in Shiny Gibles did back in December.
Piplups captured during this Community Day will also get an exclusive move when evolved into Empoleon, which could tip the balance for players during competitive matches and raids. However, only Piplups that evolve during Community Day hours will learn this move, so competitive players will have to keep that in mind. While it hasn't been confirmed by Niantic, it's possible the special move Empoleon will learn is Hydro Cannon, as has been the case for all previously featured, evolved Water starter Pokémon. Though even with Hydro Cannon, Empoleon doesn't have enough of a competitive edge for Gym Battles and Raids, especially considering that it has Waterfall instead of the far more effective Water Gun.
Compared to other Water-types like Feraligatr, Kyogre, and Swampert, Empoleon still falls short in terms of DPS and total damage overall. While Empoleon may not be the best choice for Gym Battles, it's performance could improve significantly in PvP. As part Steel-type, Empoleon will dominate with its multiple resistances. Hydro Cannon also complements the hard-hitting Waterfall well as it doesn't take a lot to charge. If Empoleon does get Hydro Cannon, it could lead to a significant boost in popularity in PvP matches.
Pokémon GO is available on iOS and Android devices. January 2020's Community Day starts January 19th.
