PS5 Will Have Exclusive Games at Launch | Game Rant
Sony's next-generation console, the PlayStation 5, launches in less than a year. Over the coming months, video game fans will learn new information about the PS5 but for now, the console remains somewhat mysterious. One surprisingly important topic that's suddenly become a point of contention is whether the PS5 will have platform exclusives at launch, with a new report claiming it will.
During the most recent episode of the Kotaku Splitscreen podcast, Jason Schreier discussed what can be expected with the launch of next-generation consoles. Unprompted, he talked about knowing some of Sony's upcoming PS5 titles, noting that these titles are going to be PS5 exclusives.
From there the conversation shifts to a discussion about how multi-platform games will scale across generations and across different SKUs. It's a somewhat surprising admission, which perhaps may have been said unintentionally or incorrectly. Given Schreier's record, however, if it wasn't a slip of the tongue then it's likely reliable information. The PlayStation 5 appears to be set to launch alongside multiple PS5-exclusive games.
The reason this is notable is the recent reveal that the Xbox Series X console will not be launching with console-exclusive first-party games. Matt Booty of Xbox Game Studios confirmed that for the first "year or two" all Xbox Game Studios titles will be available for both Xbox Series X and Xbox One. This revelation led many to question whether Sony would follow suit and design PS5 launch titles to also work on the PS4, but the answer appears to be no.
What this means for both Sony and Microsoft is likely a complicated, but very interesting subject. Platform-exclusive games at a console's launch are intended to help drive launch day sales of the console. Sony clearly wants the PS5 console to sell well at launch, but Microsoft appears to want to retain as many players on its Xbox services like Game Pass as possible through the new console generation transition.
Sony may end up selling more PS5s than Microsoft sells Xbox Series X consoles, but Microsoft may have more players playing its first-party launch games. The next generation of consoles is going to be very interesting.
The PlayStation 5 is set to launch holiday 2020.
