What to Expect From Mortal Kombat 11 in 2020 | Game Rant
There's little doubt that Mortal Kombat 11 is one of the biggest fighting games today; after all, it and Mortal Kombat X top the charts for fighting games on consoles. This is partially due to the amount of post-launch content that each game received/is receiving, and while there are games out there that push out more than MK11, there's few that match its quality.
Going into 2020, it stands to reason that Mortal Kombat 11 will keep up its hot streak for continued content, but what form that content takes still remains to be seen. Based on past patterns, however, it seems like 2020 could be a strong year, and here's what players can reasonably expect.
In keeping with the thus-far established release pattern, Joker is set to release in January followed by Spawn in March. Players can reasonably expect to see more on Joker around January 21, as traditionally, new trailers and details pop up about a week before release, and Joker is coming to Mortal Kombat 11 on January 28. It'll be quite some time before new Spawn details pop up, though it's not impossible a new render or two are revealed prior to his launch. Hopefully, Spawn is worth the wait, as most of Mortal Kombat 11 DLC fighters have been superb additions so far, and Spawn has potential to end the first Kombat Pack strong.
With Spawn close off the first Kombat Pack, it seems safe to say that Mortal Kombat 11 will reveal Kombat Pack 2 in 2020. Whether there's almost a seamless transition between DLC packs or if players will have to wait a few months remains to be seen, but once it does begin, it seems likely that new characters will arrive every other month. There's nothing official as to who those characters could be, but there's been leaks that heavily suggest Fujin, Sheeva, Ash Williams, and/or even Stryker (though this character is the least likely of the four so far) could be real possibilities.
However, it's also worth mentioning that MK11 director Ed Boon has suggested that there are some surprises in store for 2020, with many also thinking he was referring to DLC characters. Assuming that this is indeed the case, it's possible that Mortal Kombat 11 has yet to show even the slightest hint at what it's holding in its hand.
Throughout 2019, Mortal Kombat 11 featured several Krypt events for players to get their hands on some new, rare loot. These events are practically a staple at this point, so it seems safe to say they will continue to take place throughout 2020.
One thing it would be interesting to see more of are seasonal events. Mortal Kombat 11's Winter Wonderland event brought some special towers for the holidays, and it'll be interesting to see if there's more to that in the future. Whether that is the case or not remains to be seen.
There's also likely to be a few gameplay tweaks in Mortal Kombat 11 over the year, yet for the most part, that can be hard to speculate upon. However, there are three things that seem incredibly likely, namely Crossplay, tournament mode, and some character balance changes.
Crossplay is currently in beta for Mortal Kombat 11, but this only includes PS4 and Xbox One. It stands to reason that it will eventually expand, perhaps allowing Stadia, PC, or maybe even Switch players into the fold, but as to when that is could be anyone's guess. That said, it seems incredibly likely that it would happen at some point in 2020.
Currently, there are only three tournament mode variations for characters, but NetherRealm has discussed expanding this before or perhaps even allowing custom variations. The latter would probably come long after giving players at least a few more standard variations. And finally, there are a few characters who need some tweaks to their gameplay. Mortal Kombat 11's Kitana is broken, for example, in that her damage scaling is incredibly low without any real compensation elsewhere. It may not be a whole lot, or it could be complete sweeping changes. Either way, these are inevitable in fighting games like MK11, especially as its roster continues to grow.
Ultimately, it seems that, if Mortal Kombat 11 continues down the beaten path, it'll be another big year for the gory fighting franchise.
Mortal Kombat 11 is out now for PC, PS4, Stadia, Switch, and Xbox One.
