Xbox Series X Tweet Shows How Tech Has Grown | Game Rant

Rumors have surrounded Microsoft's upcoming console, the Xbox Series X, with some making lofty claims about the power held in the new system. While Microsoft has announced a number of features coming with the massive tower, including its real name being simply the Xbox, some of the more specific specs of the system are still up for debate.

One rumor in particular involves the Xbox Series X's processing power reaching upwards of 12 TeraFlops, coming at double the power of the current Xbox One X. A recent tweet has put that power into perspective, showing exactly how far gaming tech, and computer technology in general, has come over the past 20 years.

According to Twitter user Shen Ye, the Head of Product Marketing for the HTC Vive, those 12 TeraFlops were first achieved 20 years ago by the IBM ASCI White supercomputer. For those unaware of what exactly the term "supercomputer" means, it's more than simply a high-end piece of hardware, and is closer to a combination of thousands of processors that work together as a single unit. In the case of the ASCI White, the system itself weighed in at 106 tons and cost over $110 million to build, a considerable step up from the Series X's size that fans have already been commenting on.

To put the timeline for this processing growth into perspective, 12 TeraFlops required 106 tons of hardware when Star Wars: The Phantom Menace premiered, but it can fit in a breadbox soon after Rise of Skywalker premieres. So, if the step up from the Xbox One to the Series X isn't impressive enough, the jump from the original Xbox would have been an unbelievable feat only a short time ago. Thankfully, the advance of technology over the last two decades also means that while the Series X's price may not have been announced yet, it'll at least come out well under the ASCI White's $110 million price point.

While the Xbox Series X might still be nearly a year away, the specs for the system are impressive to say the least. The competition has yet to show where Microsoft stands among Next-Gen consoles, but the advancement among the company's own previous releases and the history of technology is promising for the future of gaming. Although, it should be noted that the 12 TeraFlop milestone is currently a rumor, and it should be taken with a grain of salt as some leaks can be contradictory as false information gets mixed in with legitimate sources.
