Grand Theft Auto Online Diamond Heist Stream Gets Out of Control for Rockstar
Inviting critically acclaimed rappers onto an official livestream to play Grand Theft Auto Online might seem like a promising PR move, but sometimes it turns out to not be the best idea, as Rockstar Games found out to their dismay on February 1.
The video game publisher invited American rappers Danny Brown and JPEGMAFIA onto its official Twitch channel to play a bit of Grand Theft Auto Online’s new Diamond Casino Heist, which was released in December 2019. Brown’s music is now featured in the game, along with the songs of several other rappers, on a new GTA station called iFruit Radio that was added in the same content update as the heist. The rapper is also known to be a fan of the game and is therefore presumably a decent player.
However, as the pair’s attempts to complete the heist went repeatedly wrong, Brown got riled up and voiced his frustration as only a rapper can. He began to drop the N word and make jokes that weren’t entirely politically correct, sometimes leaving both the Rockstar staff and JPEGMAFIA taken aback rather than amused. But Brown was unapologetic, pointing out that Rockstar should have known what to expect when inviting him onto the stream. At one point, in response to viewer criticism of the rappers’ performance in the game, Brown interrupted the stream to remind them that he “did this type of s*** in real life, so don’t question my f****** gaming…. You ain’t never held a real gun in your life. You’re a f****** incel.”
It’s not clear whether Brown was truly upset or if he was just having fun, but his hijinks and language quickly became more entertaining to watch than the gameplay itself. Viewer reactions ranged from being highly amused to wondering if Brown was drunk, surmising that he would never be invited back to Rockstar’s Twitch channel, and speculating on how quickly he would be booted from the stream.
Perhaps it was the pressure of playing the game in front of hundreds of viewers, but Brown and JPEGMAFIA unfortunately ran out of lives and didn’t manage to complete GTA Online's Diamond Casino Heist before the stream ended. Although Rockstar hadn’t specified how long the stream with the two special guests was intended to last, it stopped after only one hour, leaving many viewers to question whether or not it was cut short due to Brown’s behavior.
Grand Theft Auto Online is available on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
