How Destiny 2's Telesto Ornaments May Predict The Game's Future
Destiny games have a reputation of obscure and ambiguous storytelling in a variety of ways. But more importantly, players keep coming back to Destiny 2 because the lore of the world around Guardians continues to surprise and entice players every time something new is discovered.
Although Destiny 2 has Season 10 coming in early March, many are already beginning to theorize what's in store for the pivotal Season 11. A new Destiny theory seems to point to the most unlikely source for hints: the Telesto.
More specifically, it's the Telesto's ornaments that seem to be referencing future events in the Destiny canon. Reddit user u/Hyperdude2018 recently pointed out that every ornament released for the exotic fusion rifle thus far has referenced the major expansions to Destiny 2 ahead of their release in very vague ways.
It's only appropriate that the Telesto, a weapon with a proven record of infamy even in Season of Dawn, now may have even more significance. Each ornament release for the weapon, save for the newest ornament released in Season 9, points to events that have occurred in later expansions of the game. So far the Telesto has received three additional ornaments: "Reef In Ruins" introduced in Season 2 (Curse of Osiris), "Dread From Below" introduced in Season 3 (Warmind), and just recently "Long Live The Queen" introduced in the current Season 9 (Shadowkeep).
Analyzing these titles yields an uncanny connection between the ornament names and Destiny 2's major expansions thus far. "Reef In Ruins" is clearly a reference to Forsaken, the expansion Bungie got right which breathed new life into Destiny 2. "Dread From Below" is very close to the original Destiny's "The Dark Below" expansion, which in turn means it was likely a reference to Destiny 2's return to the Moon in Shadowkeep. This means, assuming the third time's a charm, "Long Live The Queen" is almost certainly a hint being dropped for Destiny 2's next expansion.
The "Queen" being referenced in the Telesto's latest ornament is likely pointing to the Queen of the Reef, Mara Sov. There are other Queens it might be referencing, like the Hive's witch-queen Savathûn, but one look at the ornament itself and it only makes sense it would be Mara. "Long Live The Queen" has a distinctly regal look, with inlays of gold and purple lead throughout the weapon's frame. Compare that to Mara Sov's appearance in Destiny overall, and it makes more sense for the ornament to be referencing the Queen of the Reef.
This reference has some interesting implications when lined up with Uldren Sov's initially confusing return as a Guardian. At the end of Forsaken, Guardians learned Uldren Sov returned to life as a Guardian through a secret cinematic cutscene players could find in The Dreaming City. Pair this with a lore entry detailing what Uldren has been doing since Forsaken, and players now know he's lost all memory of his past. Uldren is currently living out life as a Guardian who's fully unaware of the fact that he murdered Cayde-6.
That in mind, if Mara Sov is returning in the next major Destiny 2 expansion, it's going to create some serious complications. With Uldren Sov losing all of his previous memories according to Destiny lore, he very well may not recognize his sister Mara at all. If Uldren doesn't remember his sister, then he's going to have even less reason to sympathize with her and her plans. Fans know she is still technically alive, but is either under some influence or is sided with the Nine. If she is making a return, her intentions are definitely unclear and even worse is the Nine will certainly play a role in her return.
As mentioned previously, this isn't the first time the Telesto has teased future events for Destiny 2. When the rifle was initially released, the Telesto's lore contained a message foreshadowing the events of Destiny 2: Forsaken way ahead of time. Within the lore tab's message, a secret cipher was decoded by taking the first letter of every word in the message and combining them together. "CROW UNTRUSTWORTHY DESIRES POWER" read the message, referring to Uldren Sov, also known as "The Master of Crows."
While this isn't the most complicated secret in Destiny 2 lore thus far, it is interesting that these connections have been in Destiny 2 for a while. It may be a while before fellow Guardians can prove this Telesto theory is true, but for now it may provide a hint at what big revelation Bungie is teasing for Season 11.
Destiny 2 is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
