Uncharted Movie Taking Inspiration from Uncharted 4 | Game Rant
The mysterious Uncharted movie has undergone multiple transformations, upheavals, and delays in its time, but now it looks like Sony finally has a solidified vision– and the movie's own Nathan Drake has revealed the new direction. Tom Holland, set to star as a younger Nathan Drake in the film, spoke about the movie's inspiration, and its progress, at Disney Pixar's Onward World Premiere.
It's already been a couple of years since Tom Holland was attached to the Uncharted movie as Nathan Drake, replacing Mark Wahlberg, who in turn is now set to play Nate's friend and mentor Sully. Despite having had to find a seventh director after every previous attached name dropped out, Uncharted looks to be moving forward with filming and already has a release date, too.
Speaking to IGN at the Disney premiere, Tom Holland appears ready and excited to play the role of Nathan Drake and revealed that not only is Uncharted 4 one of his favorite video games of all time, but it's also one of the main sources of inspiration for the Uncharted movie. "If I'm honest, one of my favorite video games ever is the fourth Uncharted game..and lots of the inspiration from the film has come from that game in particular," Holland said.
For those thinking that Holland looks a bit young for the Naughty Version of Drake, especially in Uncharted 4, that's because Sony isn't planning a direct adaptation of any one game. Rather, according to Holland, Uncharted will be a prequel and offer a "fresh take" on Drake's character in his younger years while still relying heavily on the games for inspiration.
Holland also told IGN that production on the Uncharted movie is fast-approaching, saying that filming would begin in about 4 weeks. He also described the movie as being "global" in scope, adding, "We travel the world, we see some amazing places, and Mark Wahlberg and I are going to have a great summer together." After its sixth attached director, Travis Knight, departed last year, Sony delayed the Uncharted prequel yet again. However, with Zombieland's Ruben Fleischer now confirmed to be Uncharted's new, and hopefully permanent, director, preparations for the movie are in full swing again.
While the Uncharted movie has a strange history– and at times looked like its development may have stalled permanently– it looks like Sony truly intends to get its adaptation off the ground and ready for its already-set release date in March of 2021. What, exactly, fans will get remains to be seen, but at least Uncharted doesn't lack for enthusiasm from its leading actor.
Uncharted is set to be released on March 5, 2021.
