Catch These Animal Crossing: New Horizons Fish Before March Ends

As the time changes in the real world that change is also reflected in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. This is a huge part of the game, seen through features like seasons changing and turnips that aren’t stored or saved properly rotting after a week.

One of the biggest examples of time affecting New Horizons is through the monthly changes to fish and bugs throughout the island. Every month some bugs and fish leave, so here is a quick explanation of what fish players should catch before April arrives.

For those Animal Crossing: New Horizons players dead-set on filling up every exhibit for Blather’s museum on the island, there are only a few days left to catch the fish that will be leaving in March. Those fish range from common fish to extremely rare fish that only spawn every so often in specific places. This includes fish that only spawn in the ocean to fish that only spawn in the rivers on clifftops.

While rare fish like the coelacanth that spawns on rainy days stick around for long periods of time or indefinitely, some extremely rare fish disappear and reappear depending on the month. For example, the stringfish is a very rare river fish that only spawns in the rivers located on cliffs. What’s more, is that the stringfish only appears from 4 pm to 9 am, meaning the time to catch these extremely rare fish is even more limited.

As such, players who are short on time might need to use fish bait to find the remaining fish before April comes around. Fish bait can be crafted after digging up manila clams on the beach. Fish bait will allow one fish to spawn wherever the bait is sprinkled. This greatly speeds up the fishing process and gives players a better chance of identifying specific fish by their shadows. Here is a list of every fish leaving in the Northern Hemisphere in March:

  • Bitterling – Spawn: River / Available: All Day / Size: Smallest
  • Yellow Perch – Spawn: River / Available: All Day / Size: Medium
  • Stringfish – Spawn: River (cliffs) / Available: 4 pm – 9 am / Size: Largest
  • Sturgeon – Spawn: River (mouth) / Available: All Day / Size: Largest
  • Sea Butterfly – Spawn: Sea / Available: All Day / Size: Smallest
  • Football Fish – Spawn: Sea / Available: 4 pm – 9 am / Size: Large

While only the stringfish is extremely hard to catch, players should make a priority to focus on all of these fish before the month ends. One helpful way to catch some of the trickier fish is to use nook miles to go on mystery tours. This can help players manage the rate at which fish spawn and increase their chances of finding rare fish faster depending on where they spawn.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is out now, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
