Halo: The Master Chief Collection Gets Update That's Massive on Xbox One, Small on PC

The developer of Halo: The Master Chief Collection, 343 Industries, has released an update for the game on both PC and Xbox One that introduces new features and fixes a few bugs. While the patch for PC players is relatively small, Xbox One owners have a very large file to download and might have to wait quite a while before they can enjoy the additions to the game.

Players who have purchased Halo: The Master Chief Collection on Steam have the smallest update file size at only 306 MB. Those who own the PC version of the game via the Microsoft Store or have access to it through Xbox Game Pass for PC will only have to download a 1.79 GB file. Xbox One owners, however, are getting a whopping 58.95 GB update.

The features added to Halo: The Master Chief Collection include:

  • New spartan customization 3D model viewer for H:CEA
  • A new option in settings to toggle between either the classic Halo: Combat Evolved (H:CE) multiplayer audio or updated H:CEA audio when playing multiplayer
  • The main menu background video has been updated to celebrate H:CEA joining MCC on PC
  • Additional Competitive and Social matchmaking options for H:CEA

The update also resolves a number of issues, including fixes to the flight build for Halo Insiders.

  • Improved game stability resolving several crashes.
  • Player became invisible in a Ghost by boarding the vehicle while entering a teleporter.
  • HUD positioning better reflects legacy.
  • Respawn beep sound effects have a lower pitch than in legacy Halo: CE.
  • Multiple remastered sound effects playing in H:CE multiplayer when set to “Classic.”
  • Added ability to set primary and secondary weapon in custom games.
  • Sometimes controller vibration continues when pausing the title.
  • Player name appearing during camouflaged states better reflects legacy.
  • Plasma projectiles from Type-25 Spirit are now aligned with the turrets.

Understandably, the massive update file size for the Xbox One version of Halo: The Master Chief Collection is causing frustration for some players, particularly those with slow internet speeds or data caps. A possible explanation for the disproportionate difference in file size is that PC versions of the game can simply download the updated files and overwrite the old ones. The Xbox One, according to some theories, must instead download chunks of data in order to get at the specific update file contained within that chunk. The rest of the data, once downloaded, is discarded if it’s unneeded.

The Xbox One has the option to automatically download game and console updates as they become available. This is convenient if a large update such as the one for Halo: The Master Chief Collection is released while a person is at work, for example. To turn on this feature, open the guide menu by pressing the Xbox button in the center of the controller. Go to System > Settings > System > Updates & downloads. Then select “Keep my console up to date” and “Keep my games & apps up to date.” The only potential downside to enabling this feature is that the Xbox One might creepily turn on in the middle of the night.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection is available on PC and Xbox One.
