Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Teased Warzone in Its First Reveal Trailer
Call of Duty: Warzone is a battle royale expansion to Infinity Ward’s 2019 title Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Warzone has been an absolute smash hit for the developers, having pulled in huge numbers in its first 24 hours with over 6 million players online throughout its launch.
While its not a huge surprise that Warzone has been a huge hit among many Call of Duty fans seeing as the series consistently performs well in terms of sales, it’s impressive to see it maintaining the momentum. Interestingly, it seems that Infinity Ward was planning Warzone even before Modern Warfare launched in 2019.
With Season 3 rolling out for Modern Warfare, big changes are occurring in both the main game and in Warzone, as well. There has been a ton of new content added with Season 3’s launch and roll-out. Content like brand new Operators for players to unlock, new game modes to play, and new modes for Warzone like Quads and Plunder. It’s fairly impressive how smoothly Warzone was integrated into the landscape of Modern Warfare considering how swift the game’s reveal seemed.
However, it might not be surprising now that it’s been confirmed that Infinity Ward had planned out Warzone all the way back in May of 2019. Infinity Ward’s narrative director, Taylor Kurosaki, recently replied to a question asked by a Twitter user confirming that a scene in Modern Warfare’s initial reveal trailer was a soft-confirm for the battle royale expansion. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was official revealed on May 30 last year as a re-imagining as one of the series’ most beloved entries.
Kurosaki responded to a user on Twitter with “#Warzone” after being asked if a scene that plays during the reveal trailer was actually a tease for Warzone. The scene in question shows soldiers dropping out of the back of a helicopter that is eerily similar to the cutscene that plays when players are preparing to drop in an actual Warzone match. For those who may not know, every match of Warzone starts with players dropping out the back of a cargo helicopter and into the game’s enormous map littered with various locations.
It’s pretty impressive to see that Infinity Ward had, at the very least, been planning to launch an entirely new and separate battle royale mode alongside the main game, even before its initial launch. However, it may make complete senses to those who were with the series back when Blackout released. Regardless, Warzone is a pretty different beast compared to Blackout, with a broader variety of effective play styles like relying on stealth and sound to quietly snag kills.
Call of Duty: Warzone is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
