Dragon Ball Fans Discover Surprising Final Fantasy 7 Connection
Cloud's character model in Final Fantasy 7 Remake looks fairly different from his original in Final Fantasy 7. Aside from no longer being a polygon figure, Cloud's color scheme has also changed. His outfit used to be purple with a red belt and brown shoes before it became the predominately black outfit he wears today.
This fact wasn't anything that warranted a second look before. But now that Final Fantasy 7 Remake has put the Final Fantasy 7 universe back into the spotlight, fans have noticed a rather humorous similarity between Cloud's polygon model, and a certain character from Dragon Ball Z.
Picture Gohan back during the Cell Saga of the series, specifically towards the end when he's stepped up to take Goku's place fighting Cell as a Grade 4 Super Saiyan. During this time, Gohan wears the purple gi of his teacher Piccolo, one that has a red belt and brown shoes. And due to being a Super Saiyan, he also has spikey blond hair. Sound familiar? Well, it did for Twitter user feralyorha, and they decided to place Cloud's old polygon model next to Cell Saga Gohan as a result.
The resemblance between the two characters is so similar that it could induce giggles. Cloud's polygon model looks exactly like Gohan when he first achieves his original Super Saiyan transformation. The only thing about Cloud's old look that doesn't match is its gloves, as they're a different color from Gohan's wristbands.
In this case, Cloud imitates Gohan because Gohan technically sported the look first. He revealed it back in 1992 in the Dragon Ball Z manga chapter called "The Emergence," which sees him and Goku first emerging from the Hyperbolic Time Chamber in their new Super Saiyan forms. Cloud and Final Fantasy 7, on the other hand, didn't appear until 1997 — five years later.
Cloud and Gohan's differing personalities are probably the only thing that's kept people from noticing their similar looks for so long — if they hadn't noticed it before now, of course. While Gohan struggled to have confidence in his abilities at first, Cloud never did. And while Cloud has always found it hard to show his more vulnerable side, Gohan has always been in tune with his emotions.
Tetsuya Nomura — the artist behind Cloud's design — hasn't come out and stated whether or not he took any inspiration from Dragon Ball, so saying otherwise is just speculation at this point. The similarities between the two designs probably only happened by sheer coincidence. However, it would be a pretty fun behind-the-scenes detail about Cloud if the opposite were true.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake is available now for the PlayStation 4.
