Final Fantasy 7 Remake: How to Switch Characters | Game Rant
The Final Fantasy 7 Remake just released on the PlayStation 4, and players are still getting accustomed to the new battle system. Trading out the traditional turn-based RPG combat system from the original 1997 version for a far more active one, the new system may take some getting used to, especially for those who didn't check out the FF7 Remake demo.
One of the biggest changes is that instead of inherently rotating through the Final Fantasy 7 Remake team's roster to initiate physical and magical attacks, the player is instead in control of only one character. However, that doesn't mean that it's impossible to change characters or to issue commands. Here's how to get it done.
First things first: Cloud is the controllable character when players are outside of battle. While players can do things like heal teammates by accessing the menu, they can't actually switch off from Cloud to running around as Barret, Tifa, or Aerith outside of combat.
As it turns out, swapping characters in the middle of a fight is an extremely easy task. Players can switch characters at any time they choose simply by pressing a directional key on the D-Pad. Regardless of what Cloud is doing, the game will automatically switch to another team member and will allow the player to take control of what they're doing instead.
While players are busy with another team member, Cloud will be taken over by FF7 Remake's AI, so players don't need to worry about that. Simply toggle the D-Pad again to navigate back to Cloud (or another character) as needed.
While swapping characters entirely is one option, players can simply issue commands if that's how they'd rather handle a given moment in battle. To do this, simply tap O to open the Commands Menu and then tap L2 or R2 to switch to another character. From there, the player can simply choose a command like they would while controlling Cloud, and the team member's AI will handle the rest.
Switching characters will allow players to carefully time their Limit Breaks and synchronize attacks, so it's something players should learn to utilize early on.
Final Fantasy 7 is available now exclusively for the PS4, with a PC version set for sometime in the future.
