Half-Life: Alyx Mod Lets Gamers Play Without a VR Headset
Half-Life: Alyx released alongside a flurry of other games that have dropped so far this year, but it's taken those who own VR headsets by storm. Of course, that has left multitudes of Half-Life fans who lack a VR headset in the dark, but all that is about to change.
Half-Life: Alyx serves as the prequel to Half-Life 2, chronicling what Alyx Vance was up to before she met Gordon Freeman. While it isn't the Half-Life 3 that fans have been waiting for, fans have nonetheless embraced the game, granting it an Overwhelmingly Positive score on Steam with over 20,000 ratings.
A new mod will let players enjoy Half-Life: Alyx for the first time on a monitor instead of on a VR headset. The mod is relatively new, so there may still be some bugs, but allegedly players can expect to enjoy the entirety of Half-Life: Alyx outside of VR for the first time.
With that being said, the controls may take some getting used to. Although players will be able to play using a keyboard and mouse, as with most PC games, the keybinds are different, asking players to move with their directional keys and teleport (rather than traditionally jump) with the space bar. Of course, these changes were likely necessary due to the fact that Alyx makes use of motion controls and gestures to control the game, which could be hard to translate to a keyboard and mouse.
Still, for the opportunity to play a VR game without having to spend $1,000 on a VR headset, players will likely be willing to get used to some odd controls.
