Nintendo Switch Update 10.0 is Missing These Features | Game Rant

Yesterday, Nintendo released Update 10.0.0 for the Nintendo Switch, adding a handful of exciting new features to the system from new icons based on Animal Crossing: New Horizons to custom button configurations for Joy-Cons and even a new bookmark system for news articles. With Update 10.0, Nintendo wanted to improve the functionality of Nintendo Switch's "systems and services in order to provide the easiest, most user-friendly experience possible," and while it achieved that, it looks like a few major features didn't make the cut.

Following on from Update 9.2 in March, which focused on general system stability, fans were expecting something big from the next Nintendo Switch update. Generally, numbered software updates signify a new stage in development and are fairly sizable with new features, system overhauls, and bug fixes often saved for the release. However, despite the changes introduced in Update 10.0, there's still a long list of missing features that fans have been requested since the Nintendo Switch first released. There's certain things like Virtual Console that many are begging for, but when it comes to immediate needs, these take the cake.

Easily one of the most requested features is the option for users to be able to create "Folders" for different apps and games. The home screen on Nintendo Switch presents players with a timeline that displays the twelve most recently opened applications and games, followed by an 'All Apps' library at the end containing any game owned by the user. Folders are a great way to organize the home screen, giving the player the option to group different genres, new games to be completed, streaming services like Netflix or YouTube (another oft-requested feature), and general favorites for day to day play.

Whether it's grocery shopping or buying video games, it's fairly common for someone to grab a couple of items, throw them in the shopping cart, and purchase multiple items, or games, in one go. On the Nintendo Switch eShop, it's incredibly easy to find games and check out current sales. However, when it comes to actually buying a game, the eShop doesn't have a 'Shopping Cart' option, and Update 10.0 didn't touch the eShop. Instead of adding everything to a cart before buying, each game has to be purchased and downloaded individually, with no way to purchase multiple games at once in a single transaction.

When the Nintendo Switch first released in March 2017, Nintendo's minimalistic approach to UI was adored. Sure, it was missing a number of big features but overall the focus was on the games first and foremost, and there was plenty of time to work the rest out in future updates. Fast forward three years, and players are still missing out on a number of highly requested options for basic customization with the most prominent being custom backgrounds. Themes were a major feature on the Nintendo 3DS, and yet the Nintendo Switch only gives users the option to choose between black and white. No themes for different games like PS4 and Xbox One, and no option to use screenshots taken on the Switch as backgrounds.

Nintendo has never been on the same level as Sony or Microsoft when it comes to its online services. Switch owners were already frustrated when Nintendo announced that voice chat was exclusive to the Nintendo Switch Online App; however, to this day there is still no option to message or communicate with friends on the console or app at all. Instead, players are forced to communicate using other means or rely solely on Animal Crossing: New Horizon's message system. It's disappointing that there's no option to take a screenshot of something cool and send it to a friend, especially when parental controls could take care of the only thing Nintendo is worried about.

Three years into the lifecycle of the Nintendo Switch, there is still a high demand among the Switch's fanbase for features like these, and it's easy to see why. From basic communication options not being included like messaging to the lack of customization with folders or themes, for a console that's seen this level of success, Nintendo still has a long way to go when it comes to software updates before the Nintendo Switch can reach its full potential.
