Universal Developing New Green Hornet and Kato Movie | Game Rant

The Green Hornet was one of the early superheroes to gain popularity with audiences when he made his debut in the 1930s. Several different versions of the story have been made since then, with the 1960s TV show being the best-known of the bunch today because of Bruce Lee's co-starring role as Kato, the Hornet's skilled valet and sidekick.

The last appearance of the Green Hornet on the silver screen was in 2011, with Seth Rogen as protagonist Britt Reid and Jay Chou as Kato. The adaptation was a minor box office success, but reception from critics and fans was mixed. Audiences weren't impressed by the movie's efforts to modernize the characters. Rogen's trademark humor fell flat with viewers used to more serious superhero fare like the Dark Knight Trilogy, despite usually being a strong selling point for other films.

Columbia Pictures and Sony decided not to move forward with the budding franchise, instead choosing to stick with their established success with four Spider-Man movies and various other spinoffs in its own Marvel universe. Sony's loss appears to have become Universal's gain, bringing the classic vigilante duo to audiences again and reuniting the Hornet and Kato with the studio that produced their film serials in the 1940s.

Production company Amasia Entertainment gained the rights to the Green Hornet earlier this year. The studio was co-founded by Bradley Gallo and Michael Helfant, who was previously the president of Marvel Studios as the company was releasing early films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
