Watch This Funny Final Fantasy and Animal Crossing Mashup

Social media has been dominated by Nintendo's Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Square Enix's Final Fantasy 7 Remake as the world shelters at home due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Players have been crossing over the two franchises through New Horizons' custom clothing patterns, but the entertainment news site Cat with Monocle decided to strike while the iron is hot and take things a step further.

Cat with Monocle uploaded a video to Twitter Friday of a player, who goes by sagittayystar, trying to catch a tarantula, which has been updated with classic Final Fantasy battle cinematic UI and the track "Clash on the Big Bridge" from Final Fantasy 5. These particular bugs are one of the most expensive in New Horizons, to the point that players create Spider Islands to farm them, so the additional gravitas of Final Fantasy set dressing is fitting.

Part of what makes the editing choice so inspired is how well tarantula encounters match up with the turn-based RPG gameplay of classic Final Fantasy titles — though Final Fantasy 7 Remake upends that combat system in favor of a more action-focused style. It's pretty hilarious to watch the spider constantly use 'Threaten' against the intrepid Villager while he prepares his special 'Capture' move.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons offers just enough freedom to customize elements, like clothing in-game, for it to become a bastion for creative crossovers and brand integration online. For every individual player who posts images of their Final Fantasy 7 outfits or their recreation of places like Pokemon's Pallet Town, there are also companies like Xbox that share shirt patterns.

The just-released Final Fantasy 7 Remake has had its fair share of attention online as well, and is no doubt one of the catalysts for Cat with Monocle's video. For instance, fast food company Arby's shared a DIY project replicating Cloud Strife's motorcycle and Buster Sword out of cardboard sandwich boxes.

While much of the world has jumped over to the remade classic Final Fantasy game this weekend, Animal Crossing is hosting a major event to keep players occupied too. The Fishing Tourney in New Horizons will end tonight and not return until July, so now is the time to cash in before going back to tarantula farming.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is out now, exclusively for Nintendo Switch.
