WWE Releases Cain Velasquez | Game Rant
WWE's series of contracted professional wrestler releases and furloughs are unfortunately not over, it seems. Another wrestler has now been confirmed to have been released. That wrestler being Cain Velasquez, an ex-MMA fighter and a former two-time UFC Heavyweight Champion. Velasquez joins a list of over 20 other WWE wrestlers to have been released.
Velasquez's wrestling debut was in March 2019 with the Mexican promotion Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide. He wore a luchador mask for the fight and both surprised and impressed the pro wrestling scene. He was later signed to a WWE contract in October 2019, where he was built as a competitor to WWE Champion Brock Lesnar. Lesnar being the UFC opponent Velasquez defeated to earn his first Heavyweight Championship.
Lesnar and Velasquez went on to have just a single match, which Velasquez lost. A second match was then planned between the two in January 2020, but Velasquez was reported to have suffered an injury and the fight never went through. He hasn't made an appearance as a pro wrestler since.
Questions regarding Velasquez' health have dogged him for a very long time. He had multiple surgeries to repair various injuries, whether they be a torn rotator cuff or torn meniscus in his knee. Following his knee surgery, Velasquez never quite rediscovered his fighting form. He had just two UFC fights between mid-2015 and his retirement in late 2019. It's likely that Velasquez' injuries prevented him from capitalizing on his wrestling potential, making him a prime target in WWE's wave of releases.
