Animal Crossing New Horizons: Worst Critters, Ranked | Game Rant
Animal Crossing: New Horizons has over 150 critters in its extensive Critterpedia. All of these creatures cover a wide range of real-life bugs and fish such as Great White Sharks and even Tarantulas. Many fans even consider the challenge of collecting them all to be the best part of Animal Crossing games, as it requires players to wait until the climate is appropriate for each creature, and even teaches them a little about each one's real counterpart.
However, with so many critters, they can't all be great, or even good for that matter. This list covers the ten worst critters that the game decided to add, and how to catch them.
10 Brown Cicada
The Brown Cicada is one of the most common bugs found in New Horizons and appears during the heat of summer (Northern Hemisphere: July – August; Southern Hemisphere: January – February) between 8 AM and 5 PM. They can be found on the trunks of trees on the islands, excluding the palm trees.
The Brown Cicada is one of the worst critters in Animal Crossing: New Horizons because of the noise they generate. If they were somewhat quieter or less common, they would be a nice addition; however, as they currently are, the player can hear several Brown Cicadas overlapping during all daylight hours during summer, ruining the ambiance.
9 Mole Cricket
The Mole Cricket is part of the small cricket/grasshopper family found in the game. They like to appear on the island during the cooler months (Northern Hemisphere: November – May; Southern Hemisphere: May – November) and during all hours of the day. They can be found by following their chirping and digging when it is at its loudest.
Mole Crickets are among the worst critters due to several factors. Like the cicadas, these bugs are very common and make a somewhat distracting noise, however, unlike the cicadas, Mole Crickets are also difficult to find. They burrow underground, and the player is required to listen and dig around until they are found.
8 Mosquito
The Mosquito is a common bug found on summer nights (Northern Hemisphere: June – September; Southern Hemisphere: December – March) between the hours of 5 PM and 4 AM. They can be spotted flying around the island and will approach the player if they stand still for too long.
Much like real life, these mosquitoes only exist to annoy the player. They buzz around all night, taking up bug spawns in the process. If the player dares to open their inventory, use their Nookphone, or just stand still, the mosquito will quickly swoop in and bite the player, resulting in a dialogue box and nothing else.
7 Walking Stick
The Walking Stick is a bug that enjoys the warmer temperatures on the island (Northern Hemisphere: July – November; Southern Hemisphere: January – May) and can be found on trees between the hours of 4 and 8 AM as well as between 5 and 7 PM.
The Walking Stick is unique because it actually has a change in its appearance rate depending on its two spawn times. If the player does not want to get up at 4 AM to search tree trunks for the difficult to see Walking Stick, they will need to wait until the 5 PM spawn; however, its spawn rate drops at this time, making it even more difficult to find.
6 Mahi Mahi
The vibrant Mahi Mahi can be found in the warm months on the island (Northern Hemisphere: May – October; Southern Hemisphere: November – April) during all hours of the day, swimming around the piers and docks. It has a very large (size 5) shadow.
The Mahi Mahi is among the worst critters in New Horizons due to its surprising difficulty to catch. Along with being one of the rarer fish spawns, it also shares its spawn times and is the same size as the Sea Bass, making it impossible for players to differentiate the two. On top of that, the Mahi Mahi only appears near the piers/docks, of which the main island has two while Nook Miles' deserted islands have only one.
5 Carp
The Carp is caught by fishing in the ponds found on the player's island and Nook Miles' islands. This fish can be found during any time of day and at any time of year. They also have a large (size 4) shadow.
The Carp is one of the easiest fish to find swimming in the island's ponds. This results in them taking up areas that could hold many of the rarer fish that players may be seeking out (whether they are trying to complete their Critterpedia or want a pet). With the Carp being worth only 300 bells, it's a good thing there are not too many pond fish available.
4 Horse Mackerel
The Horse Mackerel can be found on the player's island all year round, during all hours of the day. It lives in the oceans surrounding the player's island and it has a medium (size 3) shadow.
There are a large number of fish that are medium-sized in New Horizons, with the Horse Mackerel being by far the most common. Worth a mere 150 bells, the Horse Mackerel is barely worth the fishing rod required to catch it, especially considering the frequency with which they appear.
3 Black Bass
The Black Bass is found in the rivers tracing through the player's island. They can be attained by fishing at any elevation, at any time of day, all year round. They also have a large (size 4) shadow.
The Black Bass is one of the most common fish in the game and shares its rivers with two of the rarest fish (the size 3 Golden Trout and size 5 Stringfish). Being a size 4 also makes it difficult for the average player to tell the difference between the Black Bass and a potentially rare fish. Unlike the latter, a Black Bass is only worth 400 bells.
2 Sea Bass
The Sea Bass can be found in the oceans surrounding the player's island (and Nook Miles' islands) during all hours, every day of the year, and they have a very large (size 5) shadow.
New Horizons has a lot of fish that are categorized as large-sized, yet the Sea Bass is the one many players complain about catching nearly every single time. As some of the rarest fish in the game are either the same size as the Sea Bass or slightly larger, any player looking for them is going to encounter many Sea Bass, which are worth a pitiful 400 bells.
1 Wasp
The angry Wasps can be found all year round and at any time of day on the player's island. They can be discovered by shaking trees or chopping wood with an ax, after which their nest will fall down and they will chase the player.
Once again mirroring real life, the wasps only exist to try and hurt the player. They sell for 2500 bells (respectable when compared to many other common bugs), however, their nests are only worth 300 bells, and can only be used to craft a dismal 3 DIY recipes (one of which is the very medicine the player needs to cure the wasp stings). Luckily, they can only appear on an island five times per day, so they will not disturb the player too much, despite being one of the most common bugs otherwise.
