Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Fan Creates Awesome Version of Rust Map

Rust is one of the most iconic maps in the entire Call of Duty franchise. The close-quarters combat (CQC) focused locale set in an oil yard from the fictional desert nation of Urzikstan made a huge impact in 2009's Modern Warfare 2, and has since returned in both Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's Season 2 and Call of Duty: Mobile. One fan of the series decided to take this fan-favorite map in a whole new direction with an isometric illustration.

Reddit user multihawk posted an image of the diorama-like take on Rust to the r/modernwarfare subreddit Friday created using the 3D modeling program Sketchup Pro and Photoshop. Most of the Modern Warfare map is well-represented in square and rectangle shapes, but multihawk said they had to "make some sacrifices for Rust," such as omitting a large yellow structure in the back to instead include a plank of wood "players often camp on."

Activision and Infinity Ward are well aware of Rust's popularity, and have implemented it into quite a few playlists and events since it was re-introduced in Modern Warfare. Most recently the developers updated the game's playlists on May 12 to include a "Shoot the Rusty Ship" option for players to cycle between Rust, Shipment, and Shoot House.

Rust is not the first isometric game map that multihawk has taken on. A lot of their previous work with the diorama-like constructions and weapon texturing was done for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, but in Modern Warfare they've also recreated Docks and Shipment as 3D models, the latter of which worked "extremely well for what I'm going for." Shipment is another popular CQC map, and was recently remade in Grand Theft Auto: Online.

The popularity of Rust extends to a general love for its originating game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, from fans of the long-running first-person shooter series. Not long after the map was introduced into Modern Warfare, Activision released a Modern Warfare 2 Remastered Campaign that let those fans return to the original story which helped them fall for Rust in the first place.

In the comments of their post, multihawk is eager for feedback and recommendations on what to do next with their isometric map series. They are currently "thinking about doing Shoot House B-flag next," but with Modern Warfare being the best-selling Call of Duty game so far there are bound to be plenty more opportunities to capture someone's favorite maps.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
