Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Screenshots Show Massive Graphics Downgrade

It is no secret that the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone file sizes have increased massively since launch. Each update adds more content to the game, but it may be removing things as well.

Screenshots have appeared showing a downgrade of the in-game graphics for both Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone. The change has gone unnoticed by many fans, but with visual evidence now showing screenshots of both, fans agree that the game looks dramatically different.

The first screenshot shows a scene from Modern Warfare's Ground War mode. In the launch version, the map was littered with rocks, foliage, trees, and buildings in the distance. The distant view was clear and the game had a realistic tint to it. In the patched version, or post 1.13, most of the ground litter is gone and the colors have been muddled. The distance now has a fog effect blurring far away locations.

All of the screenshots follow this pattern. The colors have been changed and the blur effect for lighting removed and a distant fog has been placed in the game blurring far away sights. Details are sharper and objects are missing or removed. The game looks similar to Call of Duty: Black Ops 4's Blackout mode, and is lacking the graphics that the game was praised for on launch.

Based on fan's social media and Reddit posts this downgrade in graphics has gone relatively unnoticed. The fans that have noticed the change attribute it to performance adjustments for older consoles and systems. Although this makes sense, other players are reporting that the game is requiring more CPU and GPU power with every update despite the change in graphics.

For Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone to maintain crossplay capabilities, there had to be some give eventually. Graphical downgrades might look worse than the original, but as the content is added into the game they may also become a necessity.

Infinity Ward did not hide the change, as they were clearly listed during the 1.13 update. After becoming accustomed to the difference in graphics, fans are starting to grow agitated when looking back at what the game was during launch.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
