Fortnite Sets Massive New Player Record | Game Rant
Epic Games' battle royale Fortnite is still one of the biggest games on the planet, with the title's recent in-game Travis Scott concert setting a 12.3 million concurrent player record. According to a post by the official Fortnite Twitter account yesterday, that popularity goes much further, as the game has officially registered over 350 million players who collectively played over 3.2 billion hours in the month of April alone.
While the statistic is mind-boggling, fans of the free-to-play game got even more good news in that same Tweet with the announcement that Fortnite will be kicking off its "Party Royale" to celebrate with a concert featuring EDM artists and DJs Deadmau5, Steve Aoki and Dillon Francis. The event's one-hour live premiere will be on May 8 at 9:00 p.m. ET with a rebroadcast on May 9 at 2:00 p.m. ET.
Players who log into Fortnite between May 8 at 6:00 p.m. ET and May 11 at 10:00 a.m. ET will also receive a "neon wings back bling" that reacts to music, specifically during the Party Royale Premiere concert. There will also be also special events held throughout the battle royale map if players log into the non-combative Party Royale playlist, according to the Wednesday announcement post on Fortnite's website.
While these events go on, Epic Games appears to be preparing the battle royale for its third major season of content. Leaks have suggested Season 3 will be aquatic-themed due to the presence of things like an Aquaman skin and rideable sharks in the game's code, and recently puddles have appeared across the map that seem to add validity to the claims.
Fortnite's popularity has extended beyond its penchant for hosting in-game concerts. Plenty of pop culture crossover events have also happened within the title, no doubt because of its widespread popularity and large player base, such as a Star Wars-themed cosmetics drive for the launch of The Rise of Skywalker with character skins and lightsabers that just returned for Star Wars Day, May 4.
That said, not everything has been smooth sailing for Epic Games. As a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic the company canceled the 2020 Fortnite World Cup, following in the wake of many other events and conferences. However that should not necessarily affect the day-to-day activities within Fortnite, and given its record-high player registration there will undoubtedly be a lot of events to take part in going forward.
Fortnite is out now for iOS, Android, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
