Nintendo Resets Switch Online Free Trial Period | Game Rant
A Nintendo Switch Online membership is a must for anyone who wants to play their Switch games online. For some of those who haven't been able to pick up a membership, though, Nintendo has good news coming up.
Nintendo Switch Online was introduced as a paid service back in September of 2018, after early adopters of the Switch had had access to the service for free for over a year. Since then, the service has received new features, like a library of free NES and SNES titles to play, but the cost has still deterred some from signing up.
For those players, there's a chance to enjoy Nintendo Switch Online for free, if only for a little while. Nintendo of Europe revealed via Twitter that the service is offering a free 7-day trial. What makes this unique, however, is that those who have previously used a free trial of the Nintendo Switch Online service can use this one, too. It's effectively refreshed the free trial opportunity for everyone. However, it's unclear at this time if the trial is available to everyone worldwide or only those located in Europe, as Nintendo's other Twitter accounts haven't posted anything about the trial.
While seven days isn't much, it will still give players an opportunity to enjoy some online features in games like the wildly popular Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which only allows players to do things like download new paths and outfits if they have a subscription to the service. Players who pick up Splatoon 2 following its free demo may also want to utilize the trial to play online during the upcoming Splatfest repeat.
Of course, this is hardly the first time that players have been able to access the service for free. Members of Amazon/Twitch Prime were previously given an opportunity to unlock Nintendo Switch Online for an entire year for free.
While these opportunities are great, many Switch owners were quick to point out that Nintendo Switch Online's service still leaves something to be desired. Players experience frequent disconnects and severe lag across a number of titles, due in part to the lack of dedicated servers on Nintendo titles. Other complaints point out that some of the features that are considered a bare minimum on other services, like being able to chat with friends, are notably absent from Nintendo Switch Online. While these arguments are valid, it's also worth noting that a subscription to Nintendo Switch Online costs considerably less than, say, a subscription to PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold, which do offer these features.
