PlayStation Reveals Most Downloaded PS4 Games of April 2020

In March 2020, the PlayStation 4's most-downloaded charts were dominated by Activision's Call of Duty franchise following the release of Call of Duty: Warzone and Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered. While Call of Duty continued to do well in April, its top spot on the most-downloaded PS4 games chart was usurped by an obvious contender for the throne: Square Enix's Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

Though this recreation of the 1997 role-playing game is only the first of a many-part project aiming to bring Final Fantasy 7 into the modern era as a newly action-focused adventure, the hype built up over its years of development was unprecedented. The game was followed up on the PS4 download charts by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, NBA 2K20, Grand Theft Auto 5, and the Modern Warfare 2 remaster.

According to the blog post written by Sony Interactive Content Communications Manager Justin Massongill, Call of Duty: Warzone continued to top mainstays like Fortnite and Apex Legends on the free-to-play chart in April. Beat Saber was the most-downloaded PlayStation VR game above Creed Rise to Glory, Job Simulator, and Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality; while the battle royale Fortnite took the top slot in the DLC and Expansions chart for its Iris Pack, beating out such games as GTA Online, Mortal Kombat 11, and Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot.

While Call of Duty may have been usurped on the main PS4 download chart, the developers of various ongoing games in the franchise are continuing to put out content that should guarantee high placements for the foreseeable future. For instance, Infinity Ward recently brought helicopters back in Call of Duty: Warzone after removing them due to a game-breaking bug.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is the king of the castle for now, but with it being a singular adventure rather than an ongoing "games as a service" title like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, it may fall on the list quickly. That said, there is plenty of content in the ARPG, from collecting summon materia to experiencing its branching story options, so fans will likely be playing it for a long time to come.

Despite the fact that Sony is gearing up to release the PlayStation 5 sometime soon, the company is continuing to support the PS4 with plenty of high-profile games and related paraphernalia, like a Ghost of Tsushima pre-order theme. It will be interesting to see how the PlayStation 4 download charts continue to fluctuate during the last few months of its life as Sony's current-generation hardware.
